Grill Master Deli – (Rittenhouse Square area) Philadelphia, PA

Grill Master Deli – (Rittenhouse Square area) Philadelphia, PA

Sitting directly across from some the most expensive real estate in Philadelphia is Grill Master Deli (GMD). As you would expect, most of the dining options around the area are fancy and a little high priced, GMD thrives with cheap recognizable basic meal options to eat. GMD is not going to wow you, or break new ground with anything, but if you just want a quick affordable something to eat, GMD is the place for you. On a nice day, they could be the perfect fit to get a bite to take-out and sit in Rittenhouse Square and enjoy the sights on a budget. On my visit, I would have their hot roast beef with provolone on a kaisar roll and fries. It was as you may have guessed by now after reading this far “basic”, but that was what I was looking for and GMD succeeded.

El Sanjuanino – Buenos Aires, Argentina

El Sanjuanino – Buenos Aires, Argentina

I enjoyed probably one of the best beef empanadas I have ever tasted here. To go along with that always delicious and famous Argentinian beef, I really feel in love with this dining oasis of deliciousness in Buenos Aires. Who cares if it is a 14 hour plane ride, it just might be worth it. Lets go!

J J Bootleggers – (Old City) Philadelphia, PA

J J Bootleggers – (Old City) Philadelphia, PA

There are only some many ways to make a cheesesteak. Well J J Bootleggers (JJ) thought it could differentiate themselves by making it theirs with moonshine mixed in. JJ’s is a huge dining establishment with a sort of Western feel to it with friendly service, and plenty of drinking options in the alcohol category. Getting back to my meal, it would be cheesesteak wit moonshine, American cheese, fried onions and fries. The fries were very good and the cheesesteak was good as well, it just did not do anything special for me to think I had anything more than a regular cheesesteak that was chopped a bit too fine for my tastes. I liked JJ’s theme, slightly above average food, and friendly service. If you are a Western fan, this place would really resonate with you.

Panorama: Classic Italian Restaurant at Penn’s View Hotel

20161203_182057 20161203_182136

Had a polished and charming meal at Panorama: Classic Italian Restaurant located inside Penn’s View Hotel. The decor evoked feelings of the Sonoma Valley or an Italian Vineyard with a wine list that either would envy. They were awarded the title of “World’s Largest Winekeeper” by Guinness World Records. William Eccleston the General Manager/Wine Director was very accommodating. The house sommelier, Ethan, made the large library of wine accessible for every palate.  Add Panorama to your list and get there pronto!

Revolutions Philadelphia Sports Wall of Fame

img_1660

(The following is a special series on Bluejeanfood.com written by guest contributing writer and correspondent for “Small Bites Radio” William Knowles. He highlights his passions of trying something new whenever the opportunity presents itself, or possibly something old, but new again since it has been a while. I hope you enjoy his very special perspective that I am sure many of you can relate to. Follow him on his exciting journey “Around Town”)

“Around Town” has come back around to Revolutions at Penn Treaty, the great new food, drink and entertainment complex opened in Fishtown (right next to the Fillmore, and across from Sugar House Casino).  This time it was for a special event honoring one of Philadelphia’s beloved athletes who is making a difference in his adopted hometown via his efforts through charity.

Revolutions has unveiled a Philadelphia Sports Wall of Fame, located by the Burger and Beer Joint upstairs.  The inaugural inductee is former Flyers great Brian Propp, who played 11 seasons for the orange and black from 1979 to 1990.  A five-time NHL All-Star and five-time Stanley Cup finalist, Propp was a part of history with the 1979-80 Flyers who went unbeaten for a streak of 35 games.  He is second all-time for the franchise in goals scored (behind Bill Barber) and assists (behind Bobby Clarke), and third all-time in points (also behind Clarke and Barber, respectively).  In the 1987 Canada Cup tournament, Propp played on a line with Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, helping to win the championship for Team Canada.

Propp is facing new challenges each day now, since suffering a stroke in the Fall of 2015.  He has made great strides towards recovery, through his treatment at the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in the city.  Seeking to assist others in need has always been a priority of Brian’s, and since his ongoing struggle became a way of life, he has a renewed purpose to help those who are going through the same scenarios as he.

The event at Revolutions on Black Friday evening was not only to honor Propp as the first inductee to the Sports Wall of Fame, but also to raise money for a scholarship that has been set up to assist fellow stroke and brain injury victims who are recovering at Magee.  Our friends at Randex Communications hosted the event, with President and CEO Randy Alexander serving as master of ceremonies.  WIP radio host and CSN Philly hockey analyst Al Morganti spoke about his longtime friend Propp, from his stellar hockey career to his history of giving back to others.  Brian’s #26 Flyers  jersey was then hung on the wall of Revolutions, to be joined by many other local sports legends in the future.

It was a pleasure to again experience all that Revolutions at Penn Treaty has to offer, and an added treat to see one of my sports heroes up close and in person.  Brian is doing better and better with time, and anyone wishing to help his cause should visit the Brian Propp Helping Hands Project at mageerehab.org.  Happy Holidays to all from “Around Town”…

China House – Woodbury, NJ

China House – Woodbury, NJ

Good Chinese food is a difficult find for me in South Jersey. Being in and around Philadelphia’s Chinatown district so often, I am thoroughly spoiled. I decided to take another chance and visited China House (CH) in Woodbury, New Jersey. When I walked in, CH looks like three different locations in one. The one lane leads to a heavy take-out business, the second isle is just tables and chairs for a sit-down Chinese experience, and the third row in CH is a sushi bar and Japanese area of the restaurant. It was a little mish-mash of an experience all in one. I would go with the sit-down Chinese version of CH.

I had the wonton soup, egg roll, shrimp with broccoli, and fried rice. They would all be categorized strictly average and slightly overpriced for what I was served. Maybe CH is better at Japanese menu, but with no one in my party ordering from that menu I can only answer for what I had. The service was friendly and attentive, but with the odd décor, high prices and setup to go along with my meal, it may be a long time before I try CH again.
