Having small children creates one to change their dining schedule when their child is hungry or getting antsy. I am no different with an eighteen-month old rambunctious boy. After a terrible wind and rain storm swept through the Northeast on a recent Friday during a long weekend I was invited to stay at the beautiful Hotel Icona at Diamond Beach, my son had enough of being cooped inside our suite and wanted out. This created an early departure to dinner at Gia by Vincent and Mia Chiarella. This can cause havoc for some restaurants, but at Gia we were not only welcome with our early arrival, we were felt to feel like part of the family. With a toddler busting at the seams, the staff at Gia not only accommodated us wonderfully, they literally were at the ready with entertainment for him ranging from a bottle of bubbles to blow around all the way to a Spiderman cake topper for him to play with. With them having me expect the unexpected, I was ready for Elmo to walk out of the kitchen at any time and truly have my son become a customer for life. As much as my son loved the attention and entertainment at Gia, I came for the food and a personality whose profile has recently been skyrocketing, Chef Mia Chiarella. Chef Mia most recently appeared on the Food Network’s show “Kitchen Casino”, runs a foundation that gathers gift donations for patients in Cooper University P.I.C.U every Christmas season, is a health and nutrition columnist for newspapers and magazines, and was just awarded Atlantic City Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40 highlighting the region’s most influential and dynamic young leaders. Are the accolades warranted? Food does not lie, and I started my lie detector test with an appetizer of Fried Provolone with anchovies and prosciutto.

Well the first test passed with flying colors and the detector came back with the result of delicious. It was the perfect combination in all aspects. The anchovies gave the dish a delightfully pungent and intensely fishy profile, while the thick slices of prosciutto provided a salty, sweet, and buttery texture to cut into through the crispy exterior holding together a melted mound of provolone inside. The dish was truly a trifecta of tasty. The main course lie detector test would be Pan-seared Diver Scallops pan seared with a compound butter.

The second round of testing came back with truths so evident; it practically preached the foodie gospel to me. The Scallops were accompanied by a bowl of pasta on the house with a wonderful sauce (or gravy depending on what you call it) that was hands down some of the best I have had in quite some time. Add to this surprise scallops that were cooked spot-on with a texture that was firm yet fine, a sear some chefs spend a lifetime trying to perfect, and some of the tastiest and flavorful scallops around. I was even more impressed with the price, as I have paid double for scallop dishes in major cities to not only receive fewer scallops in my dish, but they were nowhere near as good as what Gia’s is serving.

After having one of the better meals in a long time, the lie detector came back with its final analysis. It stated “The proof is in the pudding”. So with such a claim and Gia’s not serving any type of puddings that night for dessert, I opted for a pistachio encrusted vanilla ice cream.

My dessert just topped a great meal from start to finish. It is far and few between that I leave a dining establishment without at least one critique or something that could have been better. My only wonder, is that I had the pleasure of visiting Gia’s during the off-peak of the shore season and if such excellence and attention to detail is able to be upheld when the waves of tourist come pouring through their doors as most restaurants have to deal with the summer crowds and struggle to even get you seat let alone a decent meal. With Gia’s though if they can provide even half of what I had the night of my visit, that would still be a million times better than most of the crap I have had at other shore eateries during peak seasons of the past while down there, and with Gia accepting reservations, they may be able to pace themselves accordingly and not have to worry such much about an overcrowding issue.

I see great things on the horizon for Chef Mia. She has the talents, the drive, and with the Food Network now aware of her, it is only a matter of time before she is the next big female household culinary name that America comes to know through their talking boxes with pictures otherwise known as television. The only thing at Gia that seemed out of the ordinary was that everyone is highlighted in print of some sort from Gia (CLICK HERE for the story of Gia) to Vincent and Chef Mia Chiarella, but Beth Sobel Chiarella name is omitted and I do not know why. After dining there, you realize that Beth is just as much as a part of Gia’s success as everyone else by coming to each table to make sure everyone is comfortable, sharing personable and entertaining stories, while not overstepping the bounds to be a welcome guest at the table during service with impeccable timing and personality. With such amazing food, service, staff, and charisma coming out of Gia, they could join the list of must eats while down the shore such as salt-water taffy, fudge, Macks Pizza, and Curley’s Fries.

Venice Italian Eatery – Pitman, NJ

Pitman, New Jersey seems to be in the news in the Philadelphia area around every December. With their “Keep Christ in Christmas” sign adoring the main street of town to the “Keep Saturn in Saturnalia” sign on the other side of town opposing each others view they are at least keeping their name relevant either way. My question was what goes on the other eleven months of the year?

Well Pitman is set up to be more than just a discussion during the holidays. With their Broadway Theater having entertainment all year with some top-notch performances, a few nice shops to buy odds and ends, and a main street with quite a few dining options they have a little something for everyone it seems. I decided to stop and grab a bite to eat at Venice Italian Eatery (VIE).

The wait staff was very down home and the large majority of patrons seem to come to VIE for their pizza and sandwiches. I was in the mood for a full meal, so I started things out with their Escarole Soup.

Their version of Escarole Soup was of the red variety giving it more of minestrone feel to me since the white beans were missing and escarole almost invisible. The soup was not bad, and it was not great either. It was just not really anything I can think of that an escarole soup should be and did not stand out in any fashion. The fresh bread really helped out with the dipping cup of seasoned olive oil. I would follow-up the soup with chicken marsala.

The chicken marsala was not plated in way that would win any presentation awards, but what it did have was a fantastic down home feel to the meal. The broccoli were nice and fresh and drowned in the butter, lemon, and herbs that it was sauteed in and the chicken was tender and marsala sauce had a nice tone to it with a generous serving of mushrooms to go along and with the nice fresh rolls they provided earlier it really was a joy to sop up all the sauce with the rolls. I could tell that everything was cooked when I ordered and nothing was sitting around. The dish would not pass in most fine dining establishments, but for a location that eighty percent of the menu consisted of pizzeria fare, I was pleasantly surprised. I would end the meal with Boston Cream Pie.

The pitfall of my time at VIE would be the pie. It was obviously very old with the flavor of freezer burn in every bite and the cream did not resemble cream anymore. The only highlight of the dessert would be the whipped cream that topped it.

VIE was very affordable with some definite highs and definite lows of service. I felt like family the minute I set foot inside and everything had a home meal sort of vibe. I would love to go to a show at the theater and walk across the street to enjoy a meal at VIE either before or afterwards. Just make sure you go out for dessert somewhere else.

Being asked to cover the event “Evening with the Masters”, by the Derek Timm aka The BlueJean Food Critic was an honor. Instantly I knew that I was going to be surrounded by tasty meals and an overall great time. The event held on Friday May, 25th by Meals on Wheels in Wilmington, Delaware at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel absolutely exceeded my expectations. I was accompanied by my beautiful girlfriend and the night was spectacular. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff members and showed where the event was being held. Our first stop was into the beer garden to try out some craft brews. Personally, I am a rather simple beer drinker myself, but trying some different beers was refreshing. Some of them were not what I would go to the store and buy for myself, but great for a tasting. The anticipation of seeing the rest of the event had my girlfriend demanding we go into the main room where the wine and vodka were, and we all know wine and vodka are a woman’s best friend.

We made our way into the main room where it was packed. People were dressed to impress and it had an overall good vibe to it. There were tables set up everywhere around the big room and a live disc jockey spinning some quality tunes, making the room upbeat. Saving my appetite all day for this event, I couldn’t wait to dig in. The tables were set up next to each other and each had their display of the foods they were presenting for the evening. I was pretty sure that these talented chefs were giving their best shot tonight and who was I to say no.

The first table my girlfriend spotted was a table that had about 5 huge vodka bottles on it. The company name was American Harvest. The vodka happened to be organic which I thought was pretty unique. I do like vodka but usually when it is mixed with something else. This company was serving it straight without any mixer which I thought was strange at first but after I tried it I understood just why they were doing it. It was some of the smoothest, cleanest vodka I had ever tried in my entire life that needed no mixer at all. It went down as easy as water. Their was no kick in it whatsoever. I highly recommend American Harvest to any vodka drinker. In the near future I can see American Harvest being the top shelf in bars and high-end clubs.

The next stop we made while wandering around the amazing setup was Tutto Fresco. Tutto Fresco is an Italian eatery located on Philadelphia Avenue in downtown Wilmington Delaware. Since I am Italian, I knew that this spot would be one of my favorites of the night. They served us some homemade gnocchi. Gnocchi has always been a personal favorite of mine and with the homemade sauce of Tutto Fresco it put it out of this world. The sauce was made just the way I like it with a hint of garlic and fresh basil. The gnocchi was perfect as well. Some places tend to not cook them long enough, but Tutto Fresco did them just the way I prefer them. The owners were very friendly and I vowed to visit their restaurant next time I was in Wilmington.

Overall the night was a great experience, from the atmosphere to the food it was an event that I  more people need to come out to attend and support this fantastic organization Meals On Wheels Delaware. I am very thankful and gracious to have had the opportunity to attend this event and hopefully get to go back next year. If anyone is on the fence about whether they should go or not I hope they take my advice and climb the fence. Get out to “Evening with the Masters” and experience the same greatness I did.

Terra Nova (TN) feels more like three restaurants in one, especially with how large they are and how many room are in TN, than one cohesive establishment. The menu is almost exhausting to read with everything from soups, salads, Italian dishes, all the way to sushi, and a heavy influx of wine selections.

I started out with the Onion Soup with roasted garlic and gruyere. Now this is not French Onion Soup even though it closely looks like it and has the same setup and texture, but the flavor profile is slightly different and a nice change of pace. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to start your meal off with.

Next was the Bang-Bang Tempura Shrimp. Ringing in at $13 it was a little disappointing to only get four regular sized shrimp on the dish. The shrimp were lightly battered covered in a sweet and chili sauce. The sauce was nice, but the shrimp could have been a little more numerous or larger in size in my opinion and sadly they were slightly overcooked creating a minor rubbery effect on the shrimp.

For the main course I went with the Pan Seared Diver Scallops. It was displayed on the menu as having crab, leek and potato hash, and haricot vert (green beans). What it did not state was it coming out served like a soup. The scallops were decent as was the amount of crab meat served, but the plating was horrendous as was the amount of liquid making my meal float. The entire dish had a singular flavor since everything else was drowned out by the cream sauce covering the dish as well as well as a massive amount of potatoes served. They really need to review what they want this dish to be and execute it a little better.

To finish things off was your standard creme brulee. It was a nice way to finish the night, but was they did not do anything to enhance it out of the ordinary.

TN had their share of ups and downs. It was not a perfect meal at TN, but it was by far not terrible either. The experience I had at TN seems to suggest they would be a nice place for group outings, but not somewhere I would call a must go to location. The menu may need an overhaul and the kitchen could use some help sending out plates to look a little more appeasing and not so soupy.

I am angry. I am furious. I am embarrassed. I am also disappointed. Last but not least, I am STUFFED. I do not know why it took me over sixteen years to find out about the Meals on Wheels Delaware – Masters Weekend – that culminated with their Seventeenth Annual Celebrity Chef Brunch, but I am certainly looking forward to this event every year now. An organization that served meals to over four thousand homebound seniors last year you would think would be too busy to plan such a grand weekend, but a grand weekend and Celebrity Chef Brunch to end it all they did, and did it all with style and gusto. The food and beverages overtook two full stories of the Hercules Plaza in Downtown Wilmington, Delaware. The silent auction featured everything, shore getaways, autographed items, high-end wine chillers and service ware, and even a VIP package in Los Angeles with tickets to the Ellen DeGeneres Show.  If you could not find something you liked to eat or to bid on at the auction, you must have no taste buds in your mouth or you need to seek psychiatric help immediately. The amazing aroma of everything being cooked smacked you right in the face as soon as you stepped through the revolving door entrance and permeated for the rest of the day. From Rendezvous Café out of Denver, Colorado – Chef Kurt Boucher’s Duck Confit Stuffed French Toast with Strawberry Rhubarb Maple Syrup being the first station I visited all the way through to NEXT from Kanato, Ontario – Chef Michael Blackie’s Bourbon and Brown Sugar Braised Beef Short Rib – Applewood Cheddar Scone – Kozlik’s Triple Crunch Hollandaise being the final station on my journey, I could not have had a better time with better company than with my other Philanthropic Foodies attending. If you were you there, you know what a great time this was, for those of you who were not, MARK YOUR CALENDARS, it is only a year away until they do this all again, and I cannot wait.

The New Jersey shoreline is world famous and is trying to get their groove back after Hurricane Sandy wrecked havoc up and down the coast. Some places of the Jersey Shore are back better than others, and Ocean City seems to be completely recovered from the storm. I did not get to see how things looked during the summer rush as I am not a fan of summertime shore traffic so a off-season visit to Ocean City, NJ brought me to check the town out and to Beach House Grille (BHG) for lunch.

BHG is very down home, the service was friendly, and the menu is straightforward. No big surprises in the food department here, but the place was more than half filled even during the off-season. My order would be grilled patty melt with fries.

The patty melt was cooked medium as requested, just the right amount of cheese, and rye bread grilled perfectly. The one surprise was the large crinkle cut fries just like the ones available on the boardwalk. The price point was very affordable so I can see why the locals like BHG. BHG is not breaking any barriers when it comes to their food, but if you want a basic meal that will not break the bank while visiting a shore town BHG is not a bad spot to stop.

Certain restaurants gain notoriety because of good food, others
gain it because of their patrons. Rexy’s is one of the places that
became famous because of who was there. Rexy’s became the place to
be in the early 1970’s to spot the hockey team Philadelphia Flyers
players after games. Rexy’s really became a landmark after the
Flyers won the Stanley Cup Championship and the team was to go
there to celebrate at Rexy’s, but with over 8,000 screaming fans
awaiting their arrival closing the streets, climbing on Rexy’s
roof and causing mayhem, the local police were required to call
in the riot squads to subdue the crowds and then owner of Rexy’s
Pat Fietto had to divert the party to Compton’s Log Cabin instead.
After the win Fietto created a sort of shrine room of the Flyers
and all of the players who hung out at Rexy’s with memorabilia and
pictures of the players hanging out at Rexy’s adoring the walls of
the room from floor to ceiling.

In 2008 Fietto decided it was time for him to step away from the
restaurant business and sold Rexy’s to the Lembesis Family. The
Lembesis’s kept Rexy’s as it was until 2011 and then did a
complete overhaul of the location changing the entire design of
the interior and exterior giving it a Tuscan flair and adding a
new outdoor patio. Being a Flyers fan I used to love to dine in
the shrine room, but let me tell you the change really was for the
better. This place is gorgeous. The only resemblance of the old
Rexy’s is about four pictures from the shrine room hanging on the
wall where the new bar sits.

I started out with their Cheesesteak Spring Rolls. The rolls were
nice and crisp on the outside, with a nice spicy ketchup provided
to dip into, and frizzled onions on the side. It was not only
executed nicely and tasted good, it was a decent enough sized
appetizer for two people.

To get the actual meal started our server brought out fresh and
warm bread. The bread really was a step above most bread offered
at other dining locations and really was a bright spot. It is
sometimes the smallest thing like bread that can start the meal
off on the right foot. Next came out my Crab and Corn Chowder.

I began the soup thinking it was not that good, but after a few
bites I changed my mind. The seasoning was very minimal which at
first made me think the chowder was too bland, but then after a
few bites, I noticed the bowl was generously filled with nice
pieces of lump crab meat. With the chowder having such a light
flavor, it really allowed the sweetness of the crab meat to shine
instead. Not everything needs to be bold, and this is one of those
times. The only down fall of this dish would be the one piece of
garlic bread sitting on the side of the bowl. It was burnt beyond
recognition, and I would have been much happier with a small
amount of oyster crackers. My main entree Pork Italino is what
followed.

This was a dish of major ups and downs. The fresh vegetables were
phenomenal. Sautéed and seasoned beautifully other places should
take note of how a nicely cooked vegetable dish can truly enhance a
meal. The pork on the other hand was a tad dry and the broccoli
rabe that topped it was so bitter I thought I someone hid sour
patch kids under the cheese. The mashed potatoes would have been
better suited as just a scoop or two on the side of the dish as
opposed to sitting the pork on top of a pile of them, but the
gravy was delicious.

So Rexy’s meal was a little roller coaster like, but I must say it was the best meal I was ever served there. I used to go to Rexy’s for the memories of Flyers glory days and look at all the great pictures, but now I may have a reason to go there just to eat. The entire staff was friendly and service went seamlessly, now only if the kitchen can do the same. It was a good meal, but I know if they apply themselves they could serve something great and maybe one day have all of us over to celebrate another Flyers Stanley Cup victory.

9th Annual Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival Coverage

On Saturday, April 5th, I had the privilege of attending the 2014 Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival.  The event was headquartered at the beautiful Atlantic City Convention Center, a massive auditorium that was appropriately sized for what truly was a larger than life event.  The annual gathering has become such an epic affair that it has three separate sessions (including one the prior evening, and one after the time I attended).  All three of these staging’s were sold out, an incredible testimony to the efforts of main event promoter Jon Henderson and his team.  The magnitude and reputation that this event carries was clearly present upon arrival at the venue…

Over 100 total breweries were in attendance, and the lines of beer lovers at each and every stand goes to show that you can never have too much good brew on hand.  Amongst the samples I took enjoyment in trying included well know crafts like Anchor Brewery, the Cape May Brewing Company, Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales, Harpoon Brewery, Lancaster Brewing Co., Magic Hat, Troegs Craft Brewery, Sierra Nevada, Yards Brewing Co., Shiner Beers, Victory Brewing Company, and – an old favorite – the Flying Fish Brewing Co. (whom I previously visited and told you about in my travels “around town”).

In addition to some local favorites that are making a name for themselves in brewing circles, the festival also featured some nationally, and even internationally, recognized beers.  Most notable, Samuel Adams, Franziskaner Weissbier, Harp, and the legendary Guinness all had set up shop.  But as most brew aficionados like myself know, the most fun to be had at these events is the opportunity to try some new beers that we have not yet encountered (may they be local or otherwise).  The ability for some of these “mom and pop shop” brewers getting the chance to market their product at an event such as these can prove invaluable in the ever growing craft beer field.  Included in my samplings that I had not previously enjoyed were 3 Bears Beer Company, 21st Amendment Brewery, Big Muddy Brewing, Horny Goat Brewing Co., The House of Shandy Beer Co., New Jersey Beer Co., and the Prism Brewing Company, just to name several.

Many local, as well as nationally known, eateries took part in the festivities with some of their signature specialty offerings.  Phillips’ Seafood House provided crab cake sandwiches; Philadelphia favorite Chickie’s and Pete’s were on hand with their “famous crab fries”.  Local establishment Spanky’s BBQ Catering submitted a great pulled pork slider for mass consumption.  Harry’s Oyster Bar and Seafood, Sammy D’s (located in Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City), Wild About Wings and Tony Boloney’s Pizza and Subs also served up to all of the hungry revelers.

As its official title states, music was as much a part of the days affairs as the food and beverage.  Such notable acts as Saves the Day, Less Than Jake, Restorations, Jumpship, Dirty Heads, Still Moon, Onward Etc. and Backyard Superheroes all took the stage at various points in time.  The live entertainment proved to add to the overall enjoyment of the affair.  Additionally, the event organizers did a fine job in their attempts to place firm emphasis on fun no matter where you were throughout the day.  After having attended numerous beer events in the past, one can become somewhat jaded as far as expectations are concerned prior to attending another one (aside from the beer itself).  However, I had not previously come across a total experience such as this before with such a festival.  Much of this can be attributed to the enormous amount of space that the Atlantic City Convention Center provides…a regulation size football goalpost was mounted in one wing of the hall, allowing amateur participants as well as NFL hopefuls to take a shot at a field goal.  A mini go-kart race track was set up for those who aspire to a life in racing, and a section was even cornered off with yoga mats for those what wanted a quick workout after consuming grub and suds.  To top everything off – a dunk tank featuring some lovely ladies from a local adult entertainment establishment proved to be one of the most popular recreational activities.  Hey, what is a beer fest without some old fashioned debauchery mixed in!

Most events such as this tend to carry diverse crowds, and this was no exception.  Men and women from 21 all the way up to folks in their 80’s were all taking in the excitement.  Many groups of people create their own events in anticipation of the day, and it was not uncommon to see many show up in buses and vans, all emerging with similar themed garb (or very little garb at all, in some cases!).  To some that have never attended such a festival before, everything at once may initially come off as being somewhat excessive.  But in the case of the Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival, excess is beyond good. I look forward to attending this event annually moving forward, and encourage any beer lover who has not made their way to AC in the past to join me as I will guarantee your enjoyment.  I will see you at the next beer fest, and elsewhere “around town”…

Ed Hitzel’s “Table for One” Radio Show, April 19th

Max’s Seafood Café – Gloucester City, NJ

Not many places have been around since 1890. Well Max’s Seafood Café (MSC) is one of them. A shoe store when it first opened, a saloon starting in 1912, and then seafood joint beginning in 1977, MSC has quite a long and storied history. MCS was closed briefly from 1998 through 2001 with new owners overhauled the building restoring the plate-glass windows, tin ceiling, designed a private dining area with a fireplace, and created a two thousand bottle wine cellar. With such a storied history, the building MSC sits in has created different memories for many generations of families. MSC sits in a completely residential part of town and can easily be missed if you are not familiar with the area. Parking around the area is curbside street parking, but MSC has a nice parking lot with free parking directly across the street from their establishment which is a nice touch. The interior is very nice and immediately brings back memories of old saloons you have seen in the movies. My visit to MSC would be lunch and my order of the day would be Lobster Roll.

The Lobster Roll was fresh lobster meat, blanched celery, tarragon aioli on a toasted bun accompanied by fresh-cut fries. I must say I was pleasantly surprised at the decent amount of meat provided in the roll especially since my meal was half of the cost of other restaurants that have offered the same thing in Philadelphia. The tarragon aioli really provided a nice touch. It did not overpower the sweet lobster meat, yet added to and enhanced the overall flavor profile of the roll.  The fries were good, and much better than then double breaded fries, but the menu stated they were to be old bay fries and they were as plain as could be. When I asked my server, he responded  with “the kitchen was having a rough day and must have missed that part”.

I really enjoyed my lunch at MCS and must say I was impressed with the overall cost and quality I received. The service was spotty as big lags were experienced between service, drink fill ups, not getting old bay fries, and a long wait for the check and change even though the lunch crowd was light. These are things that can be easily rectified with a staff meeting and service refresher from management and a little more attention to detail from the kitchen. MSC had me leave happier than I entered so even with their flaws that day, I would go back to try other things off of MSC’s lunch or dinner menu, and cap my visit off with a few drinks at their beautiful bar.
