2026 – St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands: Paradise, Resilience & Some Seriously Good Food 🌴☀️🍹

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Small Bites Radio is the WINNER of Metro Philly Newspaper Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment 2023-2025, nominated by Metro Philly Newspaper 2022 Best of Arts & Entertainment, named Top Hospitality Shows on the Planet from 2020–2026, #Bluejeanfood.com named Top Philadelphia Best Philadelphia Lifestyle Blogs and Websites from 2021-2025, Best Philly Food Blogs and Websites 2023-25, and Top Philly Food RSS Feeds 2024-2025.

There are some places you visit and immediately understand why people keep coming back. St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, is one of those places. 🌊💙

With breathtaking turquoise water, lush green hills, incredible views, beautiful beaches, and sunsets that seem almost too perfect to be real, St. Thomas is the kind of destination where it’s easy to slow down, breathe, and simply enjoy being there.

And there’s an added bonus for U.S. travelers: no passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands from the mainland or Puerto Rico. You will, however, need acceptable identification for air travel, including a REAL ID-compliant ID or another TSA-accepted form of identification.

For someone looking for a Caribbean getaway without leaving the United States, that’s a pretty appealing combination. 🌴

A Beautiful Island With an Incredible Story of Resilience

One of the things that stood out to me during this trip wasn’t just how beautiful St. Thomas is, it was seeing how much the island has rebuilt. In September 2017, St. Thomas was devastated by Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm. Just two weeks later, the U.S. Virgin Islands were hit again by Hurricane Maria, another Category 5 hurricane. FEMA describes the storms as back-to-back Category 5 hurricanes that significantly impacted the territory, with Irma devastating much of St. Thomas and St. John.

The damage was enormous. Homes, businesses, infrastructure and the tourism industry were all heavily affected. FEMA reported that recovery operations began quickly and that more than $1.7 billion in federal assistance had been provided to survivors, businesses and the territory by July 2018.

Today, visiting St. Thomas and seeing the island alive, vibrant and welcoming is a reminder of the incredible resilience of the people who call it home. There is still a story behind the paradise, one of recovery, rebuilding and determination. ❤️

The Westin St. Thomas Beach Resort & Spa 🌊🏨

For this trip, we made The Westin St. Thomas Beach Resort & Spa our home base, and it was an excellent place to come back to after exploring the island. The view was amazing. 🌅🌴 From the resort, you get those gorgeous Caribbean views that make you want to grab a drink, find a comfortable chair and just stare at the water for a while. The resort itself has multiple pools, beach access, cabanas and plenty of places to simply relax. The property also offers ocean-view accommodations and views of the Caribbean Sea and surrounding islands.

But what really stood out to me was the staff. Everyone was friendly, welcoming and helpful, which makes such a difference when you’re on vacation. Sometimes it’s the little interactions with the people working at a resort that stay with you just as much as the views. And then there’s the Heavenly Spa. 💆‍♀️✨The spa was fabulous. It was exactly what I wanted on this trip with a place to slow down, unwind and completely relax. The resort describes it as a seaside wellness retreat offering massages, body treatments, facials and other restorative services.

The Best Part? Relaxing Without the Crowds

One thing that made our stay especially relaxing was that there were no cruise ships in port while we were there. 🚢❌

That made a noticeable difference. St. Thomas is a popular cruise destination, and when cruise ships are in port, Charlotte Amalie and other popular areas can become much busier. On our visit, without the cruise crowds, everything felt a little more laid-back. It was the perfect opportunity to enjoy the island at a slower pace, take in the scenery, have a leisurely meal, relax by the water and not feel like we needed to rush anywhere. Sometimes a vacation isn’t about seeing absolutely everything. Sometimes it’s about doing less. 🌴😎And St. Thomas is a pretty fantastic place to do that.

🌴 Where We Ate

Of course, no trip of ours would be complete without exploring the local food scene! 🍽️😋

Here are some of the places we visited and a very quick taste of what we enjoyed:

Shorebird Restaurant – St. Thomas, VI 🦀🥩

We had the Surf & Turf Buffet, and my goodness what a spread! Prime rib, lobster and plenty of other options made this one seriously satisfying meal.

Tuck Shop – St. Thomas, VI 🍛🍗

The curry chicken with rice and plantain was flavorful, comforting and exactly the kind of island meal I was hoping to find.

Sugarcane Grille – St. Thomas, VI 🌊🍹

The view is amazing, and the conch fritters were delicious. And the Bushwhacker? Flat-out one of the best on the island! 🍹🔥

E’s Garden Teahouse and Things – St. Thomas, VI 🫖🌸

Such a relaxing atmosphere! The cod quiche was delicious, and there were so many great teas to choose from. A wonderful place to slow down and enjoy the ambiance.

The Lost Turtle – St. Thomas, VI 🐢🍹

A great hangout spot with a fun vibe. And their Painkiller was easily one of my favorites on the island! 🍹

Sugarfin – St. Thomas, VI 🌴🍽️

Beachfront dining with a beautiful setting and a tasty Chicken Pelau.

Luna Mar – St. Thomas, VI 🌅🍗

The view is amazing, especially when you’re looking out over the water. We enjoyed the jerk wings, conch fritters and fried chicken sandwich.

The VI Cat with Pit & Pickle Provisions – St. Thomas, VI ⛵🌅

This was a great way to experience the island from the water. We enjoyed a sunset cruise complete with a delicious BBQ feast. Nothing beats good food with a Caribbean sunset!

Sunset Cove Poolside Bar & Grill – St. Thomas, VI 🍹🍗

This place has a party vibe and was a fun stop. We had the jerk chicken wrap with chips, which hit the spot.

Mountain Top – St. Thomas, VI 🌴🥤

If you’re looking for an incredible view, this is the place. You can take in a sweeping view of the island while enjoying a banana daiquiri. 🍌🍹

Virgilio’s Cuisine – St. Thomas, VI

Great way to finish any day with an amazing bananas foster.

Why St. Thomas?

After spending time here, it’s easy to understand the appeal. It’s the combination of everything.

The beauty. 🌊
The food. 🍗🦀
The views. 🌅
The hospitality. ❤️
The history and resilience. 🇻🇮
And the ability to simply relax. 😎

For U.S. travelers, the fact that you can visit without a passport adds another layer of convenience. And with direct flights available from several U.S. cities, getting there can be surprisingly easy. But what I’ll remember most is the feeling of being there. Sitting by the water. Looking out over the Caribbean. Enjoying a great meal. Having a drink while watching the sunset. Getting a spa treatment. Talking with friendly people. And knowing that this beautiful island has been through so much and has continued to rebuild, welcome visitors and move forward.

St. Thomas isn’t just beautiful. It’s resilient. And that’s part of what makes it so special. 🌴❤️

If you’re looking for a Caribbean escape where you can explore, eat well and truly relax, St. Thomas deserves a spot on your travel list.

🌴☀️🌊 St. Thomas, we’ll definitely be back. ❤️

Had enjoyable night at Luna Rossa Biagio Lamberti in Sicklerville, NJ. My entree was their Luna Rossa Chicken sautéed in a zesty white wine lemon sauce with crisp asparagus and crabmeat, topped with melted mozzarella and served over capellini.

But honestly? The real MVP was the complimentary tomato‑pie bread basket. Warm, garlicky, and bursting with tomatoey goodness. I could’ve happily eaten basket after basket of just that.

The ambiance is cozy and welcoming casual yet classy Italian charm, ideal for family dinners or a relaxing night out.

Skip’s Wrightstown – Wrightstown, PA

🍽️ Cravings satisfied at Skip’s Wrightstown! 🍽️

Visited Skip’s Wrightstown (in Wrightstown, PA) and I’m still thinking about those chicken tenders and waffle fries. 🍗🍟 Crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned — such comfort food done right.

A little background on the place: what’s cool is that Skip’s started out as a food truck in Lancaster, run by Daniel “Skip” Stoltzfus and crew, and has since expanded to a more permanent spot in Bucks County.

What I loved:

  • The chicken tenders were just about perfect — crunchy on the outside, tender inside.
  • The waffle fries were a great complement — crispy edges, soft centers.
  • Skip’s also offers gluten-free versions of everything, cooking in separate oil to avoid cross‑contamination.

Skip’s Wrightstown might feel casual and cozy, but the food and heart behind it make it feel like something special. If you’re ever in the area and craving fried perfection this is your spot.

🥢 Philly’s Chinatown! 🥢

Had a meal at Opera House in Chinatown (112 N 9th St, Philadelphia), and I’m already planning my next visit. If you’re looking for authentic Chinese & Northeastern cuisine, this place absolutely delivers. 🔥

They specialize in bold, hearty flavors straight from China’s Northeast, all made with fresh ingredients and tons of soul. The vibe inside is warm and cozy the kind of spot where you sit down and instantly know you’re in for something good.

I went with the Beef Ho Fun, and wow… tender slices of beef and perfectly stir-fried wide rice noodles that gives the dish its incredible flavor. So simple, yet so satisfying. 🍜🥩

Whether you’re a fan of traditional Chinese dishes or want to try something new and regional, Opera House is 100% worth a stop. Great food, great location, and definitely a great spot in Philly’s always-amazing food scene.

This tiny, unassuming gem packs a punch when it comes to flavor and service. The moment you step in, you’re greeted with a friendly smile that makes you feel like part of the family. 😄

📍 Located in the heart of the city, this little restaurant serves up some of the best Southeast Asian-inspired dishes around, and every bite feels like a journey. Their crab fried rice is a MUST-TRY – it’s loaded with flavor, perfectly balanced, and the crab is so fresh! 🦀

🥯 Swung by Deli On A Bagel in Pennington, NJ, and it hit the spot!

I had a classic Pork Roll, Egg & Cheese on an onion bagel, and it was exactly what a good breakfast sandwich should be — warm, melty, flavorful, and satisfying from the first bite to the last. The onion bagel added that extra savory kick that tied everything together perfectly. 🧅🍳🧀

It’s a cute little spot with indoor seating, super friendly vibes, and that cozy, local feel you just can’t fake. Whether you’re grabbing something quick or sitting down to enjoy your meal, this place delivers.

Fenwick Island, Delaware – 2026

Fenwick Island, Delaware – 2026

Small Bites Radio is the WINNER of Metro Philly Newspaper Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment 2023-2025, nominated by Metro Philly Newspaper 2022-2026 Best of Arts & Entertainment, named Top Hospitality Shows on the Planet from 2020–2026, #Bluejeanfood.com named Top Philadelphia Best Philadelphia Lifestyle Blogs and Websites from 2021-2026, Best Philly Food Blogs and Websites 2023-26, and Top Philly Food RSS Feeds 2024-2026.

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach getaway that isn’t quite as crowded as some of the bigger shore towns, Fenwick Island, Delaware is definitely worth adding to your list. Sitting right on the Delaware-Maryland line, Fenwick has that laid-back beach town feel where the pace slows down the moment you arrive. It’s the perfect place to spend a few days soaking up the sun, enjoying the ocean, and discovering some really great local restaurants along the way.

Of course, the biggest attraction is the beach itself. The wide, clean stretch of sand is perfect for spending the day relaxing by the water, taking a swim in the Atlantic Ocean, or simply enjoying a long walk along the shoreline. Unlike some of the larger beach destinations, Fenwick feels peaceful without sacrificing everything that makes a beach vacation fun. Whether you’re an early riser catching the sunrise or someone who likes to stay until the evening breeze rolls in, it’s easy to see why so many people return here year after year.

Beyond the beach, there’s plenty to enjoy. Mini golf, local shops, ice cream stands, water activities, and nearby attractions in both Delaware and Ocean City, Maryland make it easy to fill your days. Since everything is so close together, you can spend the morning on the beach, grab lunch, explore the area, and still be back in time to watch the sunset over the water.

One thing that really surprised us was just how many good places there were to eat. For a smaller beach town, Fenwick has an impressive food scene, with everything from seafood shacks to breakfast spots and casual restaurants that are perfect after a day in the sun.

The Lobster Shanty – Fenwick Island, DE

The biggest highlight of the trip was definitely The Lobster Shanty. If you’re a lobster roll fan, this place is a must. The lobster was fresh, sweet, and piled generously into the perfectly toasted roll. Every bite tasted like summer at the beach. Paired with crispy fries, it was one of those simple meals that absolutely delivers. Sometimes you don’t need anything fancy when the ingredients are that good, and The Lobster Shanty proved exactly that.

Bahama’s Crabshack – Fenwick Island, DE

Another standout was Bahama’s Crabshack, and the seafood platter was honestly enough food for two people. It came loaded with a crab cake, fried shrimp, clam strips, fried oysters, fried flounder, fresh-cut fries, and a bowl of rich, creamy cream of crab soup. Every single item was cooked perfectly, from the crispy seafood to the flavorful crab cake. It’s the kind of meal where every time you think you’ve reached the bottom of the platter, there’s somehow even more food waiting underneath.

Surf Bagel – Fenwick Island, DE

Breakfast was an easy choice at Surf Bagel, and it was every bit as good as people say. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with scrapple on an onion bagel along with a cold orange juice, and it was the perfect way to start the day before heading to the beach. The bagel was fresh, chewy, and packed with flavor, and the scrapple was cooked just right. It’s easy to understand why Surf Bagel has such a loyal following.

House of Sauce – Fenwick Island, DE

When it came time for something a little different, House of Sauce delivered some of the best wings we’ve had in a long time. They offer around 30 different flavors, so there’s something for everyone, whether you like sweet, spicy, or somewhere in between. Even better than the sauces were the wings themselves. They were cooked perfectly with a crispy outside while staying incredibly juicy and tender inside. That’s exactly how great wings should be.

Vanderwende’s at Fenwick – Fenwick Island, DE

No beach vacation is complete without ice cream, and Vanderwende’s at Fenwick was the perfect stop to cool off. The ice cream was incredibly creamy and rich, and the mint chocolate chip hit the spot after a long day in the sun. It’s one of those classic vacation stops that somehow tastes even better after spending the day on the beach.

Lizzie’s Cafe & Bistro on 142nd Street – Ocean City, MD

Before heading home, we made one last stop just a few minutes away at Lizzie’s Cafe & Bistro on 142nd Street in Ocean City, Maryland. We ordered another lobster roll, served with chips, and it made for a great final meal before wrapping up the trip. Being so close to Fenwick makes it an easy stop if you’re exploring the area.

Fenwick Island is one of those places that reminds you a beach vacation doesn’t have to be packed with giant crowds and nonstop attractions to be memorable. Sometimes all you need is a beautiful beach, the sound of the ocean, great local restaurants, and a few days to slow down and enjoy yourself.

Between relaxing on the sand, exploring the area, eating some fantastic seafood, grabbing an amazing breakfast bagel, enjoying perfectly cooked wings, and finishing the nights with homemade ice cream, Fenwick Island gave us everything we were looking for in a beach getaway.

If you’re planning your next trip to the Delaware beaches, don’t overlook Fenwick Island. It has all the ingredients for a relaxing vacation, and after one visit, it’s easy to understand why so many people make it a yearly tradition.

🥡 China Chef in Lawrenceville, NJ, better than your average Chinese takeout spot!

I had the Chicken & Broccoli and Mongolian Beef, and both dishes were full of flavor, cooked perfectly, and not overly greasy like you sometimes get elsewhere. The chicken was tender, the broccoli still had that nice crunch, and the Mongolian beef was rich and savory with just the right amount of sweetness and heat. 🔥

Also, special shoutout to the Pork Fried Rice. So simple, but really well done. You can tell they care about getting even the classics right.

If you’re local or passing through Lawrenceville, China Chef is definitely worth trying next time that Chinese food craving hits!

If you’re looking for more than just dinner, Mr. Edison in Philadelphia is a place you need to visit. Located inside the historic Bellevue Hotel in the heart of Center City, this restaurant has a really cool story. The Bellevue was one of the first grand buildings in Philadelphia to be lit with electrical fixtures designed by Thomas Edison himself. That connection inspired the restaurant’s name and its whole vibe, bringing together history, elegance, and amazing hospitality.

Mr. Edison is also the first Philadelphia restaurant from world-renowned restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow. You can tell he wanted this place to be more than just another restaurant. Every detail feels carefully planned to create a night you’ll remember.

The restaurant recreates the feeling of a classic 1940s supper club, and they absolutely nailed it. From the moment you walk in, it feels like you’ve stepped back in time. The beautiful décor, soft lighting, and fantastic live music make the whole evening feel special. The band was incredible and added so much to the atmosphere without ever being too loud. It was the kind of place where you wanted to stay long after dinner was over.

The service was amazing. Honestly, it was almost too attentive because someone was always stopping by to make sure we had everything we needed. But really…when was the last time anyone complained about getting too much service? Most restaurants leave you wondering where your server disappeared to, so I’ll gladly take a little extra attention. Every member of the staff was friendly, professional, and genuinely seemed happy that we were there.

The cocktails were excellent, and the prices were very reasonable when you consider the beautiful atmosphere, live entertainment, outstanding service, and the quality of the food. By the end of the night, we felt like we had gotten far more than we paid for.

We started with the Edison Meets Rockefeller Oysters, and they were the perfect way to kick off the meal. These roasted oysters came with herbs, butter, creamy Mornay sauce, and guanciale, all sitting on little mounds of salt. The best part was eating the whole oyster in one bite because you got just the right amount of salt along with all the rich, buttery flavors. It was one of those dishes you immediately start talking about after the first bite.

Next was the burrata with melon and prosciutto. It was fresh, creamy, and light, with the sweetness of the melon balancing perfectly against the salty prosciutto. It was simple, refreshing, and absolutely delicious.

Then came the lobster tortelli, which was packed with flavor. The pasta was cooked perfectly, the filling was rich and full of lobster, and every bite made us want another.

For my entrée, I ordered the whole roasted brick chicken, and it may have been the star of the night. It was unbelievably juicy, tender, and full of flavor from the first bite to the last. We paired it with the mushrooms and onions, and honestly, I couldn’t have picked a better side. They complemented the chicken perfectly and completed the dish.

Even though we were already full, there was no way we were skipping dessert. We shared the carrot cake and the crème brûlée, and both were fantastic. They were the perfect sweet ending to an already incredible meal.

Mr. Edison isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience. Between the history of the Bellevue Hotel, the connection to Thomas Edison, the glamorous 1940s supper club atmosphere, the outstanding live music, the attentive service, excellent cocktails, and food that impressed us from the very first bite to the last, it’s one of those places you’ll find yourself talking about long after you leave.

If you’re looking for a night that’s about more than just eating dinner, Mr. Edison absolutely delivers.
