Discovering Chincoteague: A Fun-Filled Coastal Adventure

Small Bites Radio has been named Top Hospitality Shows on the Planet from 2020 – 2024, #Bluejeanfood.com named Top Philadelphia Best Philadelphia Lifestyle Blogs and Websites from 2021-2024, Best Philly Food Blogs and Websites 2023-24, Top 25 Philly Food RSS Feeds in 2024, nominated by Metro Philly Newspaper 2022-24 Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment, and WINNER of Metro Philly Newspaper 2023 Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment.

Nestled on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Chincoteague is a charming island town known for its stunning natural beauty, wild ponies, and delicious seafood. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a foodie, or simply looking to relax, Chincoteague has something for everyone. From breathtaking sunsets over the water to unique local eateries, here’s a glimpse of what makes this destination so special.

Outdoor Adventures

Start your day with a visit to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Spanning over 14,000 acres, this sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife, including the famous Chincoteague ponies. Take a leisurely bike ride or hike along the trails, and don’t forget your camera for stunning views of salt marshes and serene beaches.

For a taste of adventure, consider kayaking through the tranquil waters of the island. Paddle among the mangroves and keep an eye out for birdlife, including herons and egrets. Fishing enthusiasts will also find plenty of opportunities to cast a line in the abundant waters surrounding the island.

Local Eateries

After a day of exploring, indulge in Chincoteague’s vibrant culinary scene. Here are some must-visit spots and the delicious meals they offer:

Captain Zack’s Seafood – Chincoteague, VA

Kick off your culinary journey at Captain Zack’s Seafood, where you can dive into a feast of local flavors. Start with their crab bisque soup, a creamy delight that perfectly captures the essence of the sea. The crispy calamari is seasoned to perfection, providing a delightful crunch.

Don’t miss the hush puppies—golden and fluffy, they’re an essential part of any seafood meal. The onion rings are equally satisfying, while the green beans offer a fresh touch.

For the main event, the softshell crabs are a must-try. Fried to a crispy golden brown and served with fries, they are some of the tastiest you’ll ever experience. If you’re looking to sample a variety, opt for The Eastsider, which features a steamed seafood sampler that includes a snow crab cluster, six shrimp, six Chincoteague salt oysters, and six Tom’s Cove clams, all served with butter, lemon, and cocktail sauce.

Ray’s Shanty – New Church, VA

A short drive off the island leads you to Ray’s Shanty in New Church, VA, a cozy eatery that’s been serving local seafood since 1986. The moment you step inside, the old-fashioned wood-paneled setting welcomes you.

Start with their hush puppies, easily the best you’ll find anywhere—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The platter of scallops is divine, showcasing perfectly cooked, tender morsels of local seafood. Their clam strips are a true treat, served with hand-cut fries that elevate any meal.

Asian Express – Chincoteague, VA

For a quick and friendly dining experience, head to Asian Express. This spot is perfect when you want a break from seafood. The black pepper chicken is a standout dish, featuring fresh green peppers and a flavorful sauce served alongside fried rice and an egg roll that adds a nice crunch to your meal.

Mister Whippy – Chincoteague, VA

No visit to Chincoteague is complete without a sweet treat from Mister Whippy. After a day of exploration, treat yourself to their strawberry shortcake sundae, a refreshing dessert topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. If you’re in the mood for classic ice cream, the chocolate soft serve in a waffle cone with rainbow sprinkles is a nostalgic favorite that will leave you smiling.

Chincoteague, Virginia, is more than just a picturesque island; it’s a destination bursting with adventure and flavor. From the breathtaking landscapes of the wildlife refuge to the mouthwatering meals served at local eateries, every moment spent here is a delight. So pack your bags and get ready for a fun-filled getaway—you won’t regret it!

The Promenade Grille – Havre De Grace, MD

The Promenade Grille – Havre De Grace, MD

If you haven’t yet experienced The Promenade Grille in Millard Tydings Memorial Park, you’re missing out! Nestled along the scenic waterfront of Havre de Grace, MD, this charming eatery offers a perfect blend of delicious food, stunning views, and a vibrant atmosphere.

The history of The Promenade Grille is as inviting as its menu. It’s become a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike, thanks to its prime location and commitment to serving fresh, high-quality meals. The restaurant captures the essence of Maryland’s culinary tradition, showcasing the region’s famous seafood while maintaining an approachable and casual vibe.

Before the season wraps up, make sure to visit! The waterfront area around the park is a delight, with expansive walking paths, beautiful views of the Susquehanna River, and plenty of recreational activities to enjoy. Whether you’re strolling along the water, watching the boats go by, or simply soaking in the gorgeous sunset, it’s an experience not to be missed.

Now, let’s talk about the food! The Promenade Grille doesn’t disappoint. I indulged in their crab cake sandwich, complete with mushrooms and onions—perfectly seasoned with Old Bay and Old Bay Fries for that quintessential Maryland flavor with a few hush puppies thrown in as well. It was a delightful mix of textures and tastes. I also tried the soft shell crab sandwich, which was simply divine. Both dishes were not only mouthwatering but also reasonably priced, making it easy to enjoy a fantastic meal without breaking the bank. They also serve amazing milkshakes.

The Promenade Grille is a gem, and I highly recommend you visit before the season ends. With a wonderful menu, breathtaking views, and a lively atmosphere, it’s an experience that embodies the best of what Havre de Grace has to offer. Don’t miss out!

PrimoHoagies – Clarksboro, NJ

PrimoHoagies – Clarksboro, NJ

PrimoHoagies in Clarksboro, NJ I recently tried their Chicken Suprimo, and it hit the spot. It was chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, and perfectly roasted red peppers, all nestled between a soft, seeded roll. It’s the kind of sandwich that satisfies your cravings and leaves you feeling content.

Did you know the history behind PrimoHoagies and the beloved hoagie itself? Per their website, Hoagie has its roots in Philadelphia’s Hog Island during World War I? Originally called “hoggies” by Italian immigrants working in the shipyard, these meat-filled sandwiches became a lunchtime staple. Over time, the name evolved to “hoagies,” and in 1992, the hoagie was proudly named the official sandwich of Philadelphia. Coincidentally, PrimoHoagies emerged onto the scene in 1992, founded by Richard and Colleen Neigre right in the heart of South Philadelphia. Fast forward a decade, and PrimoHoagies began franchising, spreading their love for hoagies far and wide. Today, with 90 franchise locations across the country and more in development, PrimoHoagies continues to grow, offering their signature sandwiches to hoagie enthusiasts everywhere.

Their mission is to bring happiness to our customers and team members, and serve the community, while offering a superior experience with quality products, and choice. Artisan viennoiserie bakers place a strong emphasis on using high-quality ingredients, such as butter, flour, and yeast, and on following traditional techniques for laminating the dough, shaping the croissants, and baking them to perfection. The goal is to produce croissants that are flaky, buttery, and full of flavor, with a crispy exterior and a soft, tender interior. She is also Co-Owner of their sister bakery, L’Annexe de Mamie Colette in Titusville, NJ that has bread, French pastries (except for croissants) and Breton crepes.

Last, but certainly not least at 01:48:02 in the episode, we had a little French – New Orleans – Vietnamese fusion twist talking to Nini Nguyen about the soon to be released cookbook ‘Dac Biet: An Extra-Special Vietnamese Cookbook’ available to order pre-sale now and on store shelves August 27th from Knopf Publishing. Nini is a New Orleans–based chef and cooking instructor. After starting her career in some of the country’s most innovative kitchens, such as Coquette in New Orleans and Eleven Madison Park in New York, she competed in season 16 of Top Chef, as well as Top Chef: All-Stars, becoming a fan favorite. The classes, which she teaches several times per week, are wildly popular. The cookbook that will soon be available is a collection of contemporary, extra-special Vietnamese recipes, from beloved classics like Hanoi-Style Vermicelli with Grilled Pork and three variations of phở, to dishes with a New Orleans twist, like Southeast Asian Jambalaya and Sticky Fried Shrimp Bánh Mì. Ziggel’s Cuisine – Voorhees Township, NJ

Ziggel’s Cuisine in Voorhees Township, NJ may be small in size, but it’s big on flavor and even bigger on friendly service. While it might not have a ton of seats for dining in, that just adds to its charm. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re part of the family from the moment you walk through the door. The jerk chicken with rice and peas and cabbage is a true taste sensation. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and cooked to juicy perfection, with just the right amount of kick from the jerk seasoning. And let’s not forget about the sides – the rice and peas are fluffy and flavorful, while the cabbage adds a satisfying crunch and freshness to the dish. It’s a little of a fancier version of Jerk Chicken and not as smoky as you would expect so some may complain about that, but regardless it was tasty. I would certainly go back to try more of the menu.

Eating that appetizer of Fried Zucchini was biting into a golden-brown slice of heaven. The zucchini was perfectly sliced, coated in a light, crispy batter, and seasoned to perfection. Each bite had flavorful zucchini inside. It’s the kind of appetizer that leaves you wanting more after every bite, with its irresistible combination of savory flavors and satisfying texture.

As for the Chicken Francese it was a sauce made with capers, butter, white wine, and lemon. The chicken was lightly breaded and pan-fried to achieve a crispy exterior while remaining moist. The sauce was a blend of tangy lemon, savory butter, and the subtle bite of capers, enhanced by the richness of the white wine on top of linguine.

They are above average for your regular pizza place, and the highlight by far was the fried zucchini. I could eat that all day.

Nestled in the heart of Sicklerville, New Jersey, The Jersey G.O.A.T Grill + Public House is elevating pub fare and comfort food. Upon stepping through its doors, patrons are greeted with an inviting ambiance and an aroma that promises an above average dining experience.

A highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the grilled Korean BBQ wings, a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate with each succulent bite. The wings were perfectly grilled, boasting a tantalizing char that added depth to the already rich marinade. The fusion of sweet and savory in the Korean BBQ sauce was a stroke of genius, elevating these wings to a level of culinary artistry seldom seen in pub fare.

Equally impressive was the filet tip cheesesteak, a decadent masterpiece. Featuring tender, seared filet tips nestled amidst a symphony of flavors, including caramelized onions, a velvety four-cheese sauce, blistered shishitos, all housed within a perfectly crafted seeded roll. Each component harmonized effortlessly, elevating the traditional cheesesteak experience. Paired with a generous serving of crispy fries, it was a delicious meal.

Beyond the cuisine, The Jersey G.O.A.T Grill + Public House boasted impeccable service and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff exuded genuine passion for their craft, providing attentive service that enhanced the overall experience.

This is an old school pizzeria with a family run feel. You can tell this place was a hot spot back in the day. There is a certain charm to that. I enjoyed my visit as prices were reasonable, service was great, and food was better than your usual pizza shop. Started with Italian Wedding Soup with garlic knots that were packed with fresh garlic. Then the entree was chicken parmigiana with spaghetti. No surprises here, but definitely a solid choice if you are around the area.
