This place is pretty hidden. If you weren’t looking to go here, you might never even know it was there. The food was worth finding though. The pizza was good, the wings were meaty and delicious, and their salad was nice. They are for sure above average than the normal pizza place.

Again, in 2023, Small Bites with Donato Marino and Derek Timm of Bluejeanfood.com was blown away by winning the Best of the Best in the Philadelphia Region Arts & Entertainment category out of 80,000 votes tallied in total through Metro Philly’s Best of Philadelphia for 2023. Small Bites Radio – Episode 184

Small Bites Radio has been named Top Hospitality Shows on the Planet from 2020 – 2024, #Bluejeanfood.com named Top Philadelphia Best Philadelphia Lifestyle Blogs and Websites from 2021-2024, Best Philly Food Blogs and Websites 2023-24, Top 25 Philly Food RSS Feeds in 2024, nominated by Metro Philly Newspaper 2022-24 Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment, and WINNER of Metro Philly Newspaper 2023 Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment. Our latest show is so big it is 3 hours long with some of the biggest names in the food and entertainment industry!!!

We were thrilled to chat at 01:49:23 of the episode with Anthony Gargano of PHLY Sports and ‘The Anthony Gargano Show’. A legend in Philly’s sports and culture landscape, Anthony “The Cuz” Gargano made his triumphant return to the Philly sports talk landscape again exclusively on PHLY Sports. We chatted about stadium food,  East Greenwich Little League fresh cut fries, moving to a fully digital platform and much more.

Had lots of fun at 44:45 of the episode with Lisa Lucas and Debrianna Mansini, known for their work in Hollywood’s entertainment industry, co-host Corona Kitchen, a weekly Facebook Live and YouTube cooking show. Lisa Lucas is a professional writer/producer/actor who has worked on over 37 TV series including The Bachelor on ABC, Work of Art on Bravo and Emmy winning My 1st Time on NBC. Debrianna Mansini is an actor, writer, and activist known for her role as Fran in AMC’s Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and playing opposite Oscar winner Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart. These dynamic women have recently released a captivating cookbook, ‘That Time We Ate Our Feelings’ from Apollo Publishers. The book celebrates the bond between food and friendship. This quirky, hands-on volume features original recipes for all meals of the day, plus snacks, side dishes, cocktails and mocktails, and options for vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets.

Enjoyed talking to Chris Harrop the General Manager of The Morris. Restaurant and Klara Ladyzhensky the Assistant Manager of The Morris. Restaurant at 01:19:20 of the episode. The Morris Restaurant rebranded and reopened its doors in 2023 after closing during Covid. It was previously known as “The M. Restaurant”. The restaurant is attached to The Morris House Hotel, a hotel, wedding/event venue, and historical landmark. It’s completely new ownership and they have no affiliation with The M. The Morris. Restaurant serves classic American fare and handmade craft cocktails. Guests can dine in their newly renovated dining room, or the outdoor heated courtyard that doubles as an event space. They are well known at The Morris Restaurant for their weekend Brunch service. Some of the brunch menu highlights are Find the Bottom Mimosas: finish your first bottle of champagne, and the second is on the house! A savory hit is the Eggs “Bennies” with toasted english muffin, pork roll, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce. A sweet hit is the French Toast with thick cut brioche, cinnamon batter, whipped cream, blueberries, and maple syrup.

At 21:50 of the episode a great new opening talking to Rey Reynosa of Mamajuana Café Philly. Mamajuana Café, located at 1000-1032 Frankford Avenue is 10,000 square feet and consists of 350 seats in the dining area, plus 30 bar seats and a patio that will seat 60 people to be opened in time for summer. They are known for their mouth-watering Latino cuisine, Mamajuana Cafe boasts an array of dishes that celebrate the vibrant flavors of the Caribbean, Hispanic, and South American culinary heritage. From scratch-made sauces that evoke the essence of the Dominican Republic to Colombia, each plate is a testament to their unwavering commitment to authenticity and quality. The menu, carefully curated by Executive Chef Alexis Rosario, who has been with Mamajuana Café for over 15 years, and Chef Jose Zarazuela.

Then at 02:06:15 of the episode Michelle Miller and Molly Kiriacoulacos really ‘grew’ on us discussing The Ground Rittenhouse. The Ground Coffee, Plants, & Gifts opened their first location, nestled in Olde Kensington, and it swiftly became a local favorite, with now a second location in Rittenhouse Square and they open its doors in spring 2024. Philadelphia’s coffee and bubble tea scene is about to get a lush addition with a new gorgeous plant-filled cafe in the heart of Center City. Long-time friends and business partners Michelle Miller and Molly Kiriacoulacos new Center City local based coffee shop, bubble tea cafe, plant store and gift shop is double the size of their first location, with room for an even larger selection of curated food, drink and plant offerings. The 1,500 square feet space was transformed from top to bottom into an urban oasis with features that include a refinished coffee and espresso bar, eclectic and comfy cafe seating, unique new interactive bubble booth, Parisian vibes and a hand-painted wall mural of Rittenhouse Square. For the beverage program, patrons will find exclusive locally roasted beans, a brand new house roast “The Botanist,” an expanded bubble tea program and whimsical seasonal specialty offerings. From the kitchen, look for a selection of fresh French sweet and savory flaky pastries, unique breakfast sandwiches and the famous Croffle (South Korean treat that brings together a French Croissant and a Belgian Waffle). For plants, look for everything from petite succulents to trailing vines to statement-making fiddle leaf figs and monsteras – in every size and variety. The Ground soft opened on Earth Day as a nod to its dedication to sustainability.

Another recent opening we discuss is at 02:25:35 of the episode is with Richie Romero the Partner- Chief Hospitality Officer at Simplevenue and talked about Sushi by Boū is presented by simplevenue, a NYC-based hospitality group specializing in micro restaurants, and in bringing incredible concepts to underutilized spaces across the country. The company is led by Founders Michael Sinensky and Erika London, alongside newly appointed Partner and Chief Hospitality Officer Richie Romero. Its flagship brand Sushi by Boū changed the sushi counter experience in America, it offers a modern take on the classic old-school sushi counter, providing a glimpse at the hustle and bustle of Japan’s food culture, combined with a truly unique, personalized culinary experience. To date, there are currently 16 locations for Sushi by Boū in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Florida, Puerto Rico and now Philadelphia too! Fishtown guests will enjoy ambiance inspired by the Hip Hop Era of the 90s, with graffiti covered walls, dozens of suspended vinyls overhead, playlights dedicated to the best of 90s Hip Hop and murals of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Hip Hop legends.

Last, but certainly not last at 02:49:30 of the episode,  Sam Eckstein Co-Founder of Springbone Kitchen just launched a new burger concept in NYC called Springy Burgers & Fries. It’s a radically healthy take on the classic American burger joint. They’ve got grass-fed beef tallow in their deep fryer (just like McDonald’s used to do it back in the day!) and of course their beef is 100% grass-fed; even their burger buns are gluten free. The concept is an offshoot of their first restaurant venture, Springbone Kitchen, which was an early leader in the bone broth movement. They now have 8 Springbone locations around the NYC area which are doing amazing. They used to serve a burger at their original location which was insanely popular, but they realized that to do anything well in this business you need to be a specialist. So they axed the burger and hoped to come back and do it right one day. Well that day is now!

4th & Penn St Restaurant – Reading, PA

Nestled in the heart of Reading, Pennsylvania, 4th & Penn St Restaurant exudes warmth and charm from the moment you step inside. As a dedicated enthusiast of Caribbean cuisine, I was drawn to this cozy eatery, renowned for its Dominican and Puerto Rican specialties. My visit left an indelible impression, brimming with flavors and memories worth savoring.

Upon entering, the inviting atmosphere embraced me like a familiar embrace. The decor, though modest, exuded an authentic Caribbean vibe, transporting diners to the sun-kissed shores of the islands. Rustic wooden tables and chairs added a touch of homely charm, while the rhythmic beats of music infused the air with an infectious energy.

From the moment I was greeted at the door, the hospitality at 4th & Penn St Restaurant was palpable. The staff, exuding warmth and genuine enthusiasm, made me feel like an honored guest rather than a mere patron. Their knowledge of the menu and eagerness to accommodate dietary preferences enhanced the overall dining experience.

Now, onto the pièce de résistance – the food. As recommended, I indulged in the succulent roast pork and roasted chicken, served with a generous portion of rice and peas. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, a tantalizing blend of spices and aromas that danced on my palate. The roast pork, tender and juicy, boasted a crispy exterior that gave way to melt-in-your-mouth perfection. Meanwhile, the roasted chicken, infused with a medley of herbs and spices, was equally divine, offering a tantalizing contrast of textures and tastes. Accompanied by the fragrant rice and peas, each dish transported me to the sun-drenched shores of the Caribbean, evoking memories of lazy afternoons and vibrant street markets.

The Secret French Fry Club – East Greenwich Little League – Clarksboro, NJ

The Secret French Fry Club – East Greenwich Little League – Clarksboro, NJ

Small Bites Radio has been named Top Hospitality Shows on the Planet from 2020 – 2024, #Bluejeanfood.com named Top Philadelphia Best Philadelphia Lifestyle Blogs and Websites from 2021-2024, Best Philly Food Blogs and Websites 2023-24, Top 25 Philly Food RSS Feeds in 2024, nominated by Metro Philly Newspaper 2022-23 Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment, and winner of Metro Philly Newspaper 2023 Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment.

Discover another of the hidden gems of South Jersey! I unveil for you the culinary secrets that only a select few know about. Just months ago, the South Jersey Food Scene revealed the unexpected: Virtua Hospital’s Voorhees Campus Cafeteria boasts some of the finest sushi in the region, captivating not only locals but also the attention of FOX 29, Philadelphia Inquirer, Courier Post, NJ.Com, JL Jupiter, and more.

That was  just the tip of the iceberg. There are many places. Now have you heard about The Secret French Fry Club at East Greenwich Little League? Tucked away in this unassuming baseball haven lies a snack stand that’s causing a sensation. It’s not just for Little League families; it’s drawing in food enthusiasts from far and wide. If you’ve never heard, it’s probably because you probably don’t live around the immediate area or your child is not involved with baseball or softball. The obvious people who already know are the families of softball and Little Leaguers that call these fields their home. Then once those seasons are over picture Sandlot-style baseball games under the summer sun, accompanied by the aroma of freshly cut fries while giving all children no matter their ability level in the surrounding towns the opportunity to play ball without the input or direction from adults just letting the kids play.

What has really put this location on the map is that this complex hosts Perfect Game Tournaments which is a big deal in the baseball community and has teams traveling hours to be able to play in them. This is truly where this little gem of french fry fandom has expanded and has people involved in baseball from all over the East Coast talking about a Little League snack stand. Everyone who visits raves about the little league snack stand that could with fresh cut fries topped with all sorts of deliciousness. It’s not just the spectators enjoying them either. You will overhear umpires chatting up fans who are chomping on their fries and hear the umps tell the crowd they look forward to doing these games because they know they’ll be eating some of those amazing fries afterwards.

What’s the secret behind their success? It’s simple: potatoes piled high, sliced on demand, deep-fried to perfection, and served piping hot. And the prices? They’ll make restaurant owners blush. But that’s not all. Indulge in hand-spun milkshakes, made with a generous sprinkle of childhood nostalgia. From cookies and cream to classic strawberry, they’ve got your cravings covered. In addition they have many other items that most other snack stands don’t offer, along with all the usual suspects pleasing all palates. The hotdogs are prepared on the rollers, but they even went above and beyond when I asked if they were grilled and popped the hot dog on the grill to give it a quick crisp. My order was grilled hot dog, strawberry milkshake, and the pièce de résistance of their old bay cheese fries.

But what truly sets them apart? It’s the stories whispered in line, tales of travelers who journey far and wide just for a taste of those legendary fries and aren’t there to watch baseball or softball. Don’t miss out! Keep an eye on social media for game days and become a member of The Secret French Fry Club at East Greenwich Little League. Experience some of the best fries in South Jersey and become part of a deliciously exclusive community.

Drawing inspiration from the floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light, the culinary creations showcase the freshest seasonal ingredients, resulting in small plates and fresh pasta dishes that are as visually stunning as they are delicious.

One cannot talk about Prunella without mentioning its signature wine and beer list, expertly curated to complement the light and airy ambiance of the restaurant. Thoughtfully crafted cocktails add an extra layer of sophistication to the dining experience, providing the perfect accompaniment to each exquisite dish.

During my visit to Prunella, I had the pleasure of indulging in a culinary adventure that included the unforgettable Cheesy Parisi pizza. The name alone evokes a sense of whimsy and delight, and the taste surpassed all expectations. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, with garlic-infused mozzarella and tangy tomato sauce perfectly complementing each other to create a truly unforgettable culinary masterpiece.

In addition to the Cheesy Parisi, I also had the pleasure of sampling the White Claw pizza, featuring a delightful combination of mozzarella, roasted garlic, and basil, as well as the Big Nick pizza, with its rich porcini crema, earthy mushrooms, and creamy burrata. The Queen Bee pizza, adorned with spicy hot coppa, provolone, and drizzled with tantalizing hot honey, was a true revelation.

Overall, dining at Prunella by Michael Schulson is an experience that transcends the ordinary, offering a perfect fusion of culinary excellence, impeccable service, and stylish ambiance. Whether you’re a seasoned food enthusiast or simply looking for an unforgettable dining experience, Prunella is sure to leave a lasting impression that will keep you coming back for more.

Italian South Jersey Style

Posted on

Arugula, Sewell NJ

04-07-2012

Transforming a space previously held by a Mexican restaurant into a modern Italian restaurant is no easy task. Chefs Nicholas Tomasetto and Stefano Gervas have settled into the former space occupied by San Miguel quite nicely by creating a sleek and hip feel felt immediately upon stepping foot into Arugula. It is not perfect though, as I have a major complaint about the décor. The area in question is the design at the front of the restaurant where tables for two are present that gives Arugula a furniture style befitting 0001 Cemetery Lane where the Addams Family resides. Gomez and Morticia would be the only two people who could reasonably sit at these odd and quirky chairs for dinner. Thankfully coming with three other patrons, the Bluejeanfoodcritic was saved from the possible embarrassment and seated at a regular table, but I could not stop looking at this abnormality.

I started the evening with two appetizers, the Fritto Misto and Blue Bay Mussels. The Fritto Misto was good, not great, and certainly not worth fourteen dollars. At fourteen dollars a restaurant is pushing the envelope into entrée prices, and this is not easily forgivable unless the appetizer creates an unforgettable experience which this dish did not. Fritto Misto advertised to include zucchini, shrimp, and calamari. I will start by saying the shrimp included were perfectly cooked and generous in size, but in contrast the zucchini was practically nonexistent with only three microscopic slices put on top of the dish, while the calamari was rubbery and overcooked. Arugula saved itself once the Blue Bay Mussels arrived though. The Blue Bay Mussels not only changed my mood after the disappointing Fritto Misto, it had me do an about-face and is so good it exalted Arugula into a culinary contender. The portion size of mussels was glorious, while providing a perfectly balanced and slightly spicy broth that was enjoyed so thoroughly, it took sopping up two servings of Italian bread in the broth until not a drop of broth was left. YUM! FYI – picture below I could not wait to eat before the picture was taken, so this was not exactly how it came.

Apps at Arugula

Unfortunately this extreme high did not last long once my main dish was served.  Ordered was the grilled scallop on top of a short rib infused risotto. The scallops were good, but I was extremely disappointed having received only three tiny scallops on a twenty-four dollar entrée. The small dollop of short rib infused risotto did nothing to improve its chance of redemption either. The short rib was bland tasting, while the risotto was overcooked as well. This was too bad as after the Blue Bay Mussels, I wanted to fall in love with Arugula, not just like it.

Main Course

The problems experienced at Arugula are in sloppy or rushed preparation of the meal, and easily fixed if they can focus on their style and execution. I really believe their vision of a modern Italian restaurant is easily attainable and almost all of the elements to achieve this goal are present. They are just missing that “IT” factor right now, and if they can find “IT” they will become dangerous to the bottom line of other food establishments. Once “IT” is obtained they will become the oasis in a desert of unoriginal restaurant choices in the surrounding area they serve. Maybe one day when the waiter walks up to the odd chairs at the front of the establishment, Cousin Itt will be seated there with the answer.

Do I recommend for you to go to Arugula if in the area? Yes
