Exploring the Flavors of Washington DC: A Culinary Adventure
Washington DC is a city brimming with history, culture, and an impressive array of culinary delights. My recent trip to the nation’s capital was a whirlwind of delicious experiences, and I’m excited to share the highlights of this flavorful journey with you. Washington DC is a city that not only offers rich historical and cultural experiences but also a vibrant and diverse food scene. Each meal I enjoyed was a testament to the city’s culinary excellence, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit to explore more of what DC has to offer. From iconic chili dogs to innovative pizza pies, here’s a rundown of some of the standout meals I enjoyed.
Ben’s Chili Bowl – Washington, DC
No visit to DC is complete without a stop at Ben’s Chili Bowl, an institution in its own right. I sampled the Ben’s Original Half Smoke, a delectable blend of pork and beef served on a warm, steamed bun with mustard, onions, and their homemade spicy chili sauce. The half smoke was perfectly spiced, with the chili adding a delightful kick. Accompanied by a crisp bag of chips, a juicy hamburger, and a generous order of fries, this meal was the epitome of comfort food. Ben’s Chili Bowl is a must-visit for anyone wanting to taste a piece of DC history.
Hill Country Barbecue Market – Washington, DC
For those who love barbecue, Hill Country Barbecue Market is a gem. I opted for the Cue & 2, featuring tender ribs and succulent brisket. The dish came with sides of cornbread, collard greens, baked beans, and a side of BBQ chicken. Each component was expertly prepared—the ribs were smoky and flavorful, while the brisket melted in my mouth. The collard greens and baked beans were the perfect accompaniments, adding a touch of Southern charm to the meal.
Andy’s Pizza NOMA – Washington, DC
If pizza is your thing, Andy’s Pizza in NOMA should be on your list. The Pepperoni Special Pie was a standout, with red sauce, mozzarella, crispy ‘roni cups, creamy burrata, fresh basil, a drizzle of hot honey, and a sprinkle of parmigiano. The combination of spicy pepperoni, sweet hot honey, and the richness of burrata created a pizza that was both unique and incredibly satisfying.
The Bistro at Courtyard Washington, DC/U.S. Capitol – Washington, DC
For a hearty breakfast, The Bistro offered a classic American start to the day. I enjoyed fried eggs served with multigrain bread, crispy bacon, and home fries. The simplicity of the meal was elevated by the quality of the ingredients, making it a perfect breakfast to fuel a day of exploring.
Sweet Home Café – Washington, DC
Located within the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Sweet Home Café is more than just a museum eatery—it’s a culinary experience. The fried chicken was crispy and flavorful, while the collard greens and mac and cheese were comforting and well-seasoned. Each dish told a story of Southern hospitality and tradition.
Old Ebbitt Grill – Washington, DC
A classic DC establishment, Old Ebbitt Grill did not disappoint. I started with a refreshing Gin Rikey and a jumbo shrimp cocktail that was perfectly chilled. The crab cake was a highlight, served with fries that were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The BACON-HORSERADISH GLAZED MEATLOAF, accompanied by whipped Yukon gold potatoes, Swiss chard, and remini mushrooms in a rich bordelaise sauce, was a hearty and indulgent dish that showcased the restaurant’s commitment to quality and flavor.
The Creamery at Union Market – Washington, DC
For a sweet treat, The Creamery at Union Market served up a classic vanilla milkshake. Rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced, it was a nostalgic delight that rounded off my day of eating perfectly.
Dàn Dàn Boy by Chinese Street Market DC At Union Market – Washington, DC
Dàn Dàn Boy offered a taste of Sichuan street food with their Sichuan Beef Noodle Soup. The broth was deeply flavorful, and the beef was tender and spicy, just as you’d expect from authentic Sichuan cuisine. It was a warming and satisfying dish that hit all the right notes.
On Toast at Union Market – Washington, DC
The Chicago Style Italian Beef Sandwich from On Toast was a savory treat. The sandwich was packed with flavorful, seasoned beef and topped with giardiniera, delivering a spicy kick and a taste of Chicago in the heart of DC.
Laoban Dumplings at Union Market – Washington, DC
Laoban Dumplings served up a batch of pork soup dumplings that were both delicate and flavorful. Each dumpling burst with savory broth and tender pork, making them a perfect snack to savor between other tastings.
Gloria’s Pupuseria – Washington, DC
Finally, Gloria’s Pupuseria brought a taste of Central America with their Pupusa and Bistec Encebollado. The pupusa was stuffed with cheese and beans, offering a satisfying, comforting bite, while the bistec encebollado, with its flavorful beef and onions, was a standout dish that provided a deliciously spicy kick.

If you haven’t yet experienced The Promenade Grille in Millard Tydings Memorial Park, you’re missing out! Nestled along the scenic waterfront of Havre de Grace, MD, this charming eatery offers a perfect blend of delicious food, stunning views, and a vibrant atmosphere.

Now, let’s talk about the food! The Promenade Grille doesn’t disappoint. I indulged in their crab cake sandwich, complete with mushrooms and onions—perfectly seasoned with Old Bay and Old Bay Fries for that quintessential Maryland flavor with a few hush puppies thrown in as well. It was a delightful mix of textures and tastes. I also tried the soft shell crab sandwich, which was simply divine. Both dishes were not only mouthwatering but also reasonably priced, making it easy to enjoy a fantastic meal without breaking the bank. They also serve amazing milkshakes.

PrimoHoagies in Clarksboro, NJ I recently tried their Chicken Suprimo, and it hit the spot. It was chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, and perfectly roasted red peppers, all nestled between a soft, seeded roll. It’s the kind of sandwich that satisfies your cravings and leaves you feeling content.
Did you know the history behind PrimoHoagies and the beloved hoagie itself? Per their website, Hoagie has its roots in Philadelphia’s Hog Island during World War I? Originally called “hoggies” by Italian immigrants working in the shipyard, these meat-filled sandwiches became a lunchtime staple. Over time, the name evolved to “hoagies,” and in 1992, the hoagie was proudly named the official sandwich of Philadelphia. Coincidentally, PrimoHoagies emerged onto the scene in 1992, founded by Richard and Colleen Neigre right in the heart of South Philadelphia. Fast forward a decade, and PrimoHoagies began franchising, spreading their love for hoagies far and wide. Today, with 90 franchise locations across the country and more in development, PrimoHoagies continues to grow, offering their signature sandwiches to hoagie enthusiasts everywhere.

Ziggel’s Cuisine in Voorhees Township, NJ may be small in size, but it’s big on flavor and even bigger on friendly service. While it might not have a ton of seats for dining in, that just adds to its charm. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re part of the family from the moment you walk through the door. The jerk chicken with rice and peas and cabbage is a true taste sensation. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and cooked to juicy perfection, with just the right amount of kick from the jerk seasoning. And let’s not forget about the sides – the rice and peas are fluffy and flavorful, while the cabbage adds a satisfying crunch and freshness to the dish. It’s a little of a fancier version of Jerk Chicken and not as smoky as you would expect so some may complain about that, but regardless it was tasty. I would certainly go back to try more of the menu.

Tacos Mexiko Restaurant in Boothwyn, PA is a culinary oasis for anyone with a craving for authentic Mexican flavors and friendly service. From the moment you step through the door, you’re welcomed with warmth and hospitality that sets the tone for a fantastic dining experience. The cheesesteak empanadas are an absolute game-changer. Double corn tortillas filled with succulent, perfectly seasoned pork, topped with fresh cilantro and onion. It’s like a flavor fiesta in your mouth, with every bite leaving you wanting another round. Eating that appetizer of Fried Zucchini was biting into a golden-brown slice of heaven. The zucchini was perfectly sliced, coated in a light, crispy batter, and seasoned to perfection. Each bite had flavorful zucchini inside. It’s the kind of appetizer that leaves you wanting more after every bite, with its irresistible combination of savory flavors and satisfying texture.
As for the Chicken Francese it was a sauce made with capers, butter, white wine, and lemon. The chicken was lightly breaded and pan-fried to achieve a crispy exterior while remaining moist. The sauce was a blend of tangy lemon, savory butter, and the subtle bite of capers, enhanced by the richness of the white wine on top of linguine.
They are above average for your regular pizza place, and the highlight by far was the fried zucchini. I could eat that all day.

Yummy Yummy Take Out Chinese Restaurant – Bellmawr, NJ
Small Bites Radio has been named Top Hospitality Shows on the Planet from 2020 – 2024, #Bluejeanfood.com named Top Philadelphia Best Philadelphia Lifestyle Blogs and Websites from 2021-2024, Best Philly Food Blogs and Websites 2023-24, Top 25 Philly Food RSS Feeds in 2024, nominated by Metro Philly Newspaper 2022-24 Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment, and WINNER of Metro Philly Newspaper 2023 Best of Philadelphia Arts & Entertainment.
Yummy Yummy Take Out Chinese Restaurant in Bellmawr, New Jersey is serving up an array of Americanized Chinese cuisine. It falls slightly above the average take-out joint and as it surprises with unique offering of delicious Sha Cha beef. Sha Cha beef. This lesser-known dish hails from the Chaoshan region of China and is a true culinary delight. Sha Cha sauce, the heart of this dish, is a savory and slightly spicy concoction made from soybean oil, garlic, shallots, chilies, brill fish, and dried shrimp. It’s a symphony of flavors that adds depth and complexity to any dish it graces.
Yummy Yummy Take Out’s rendition of Sha Cha beef is not spot on, but they get the job done. Slices of beef are stir-fried to perfection with crisp vegetables like bell peppers, onions, and broccoli. The result? A harmonious blend of savory, spicy, and slightly sweet flavors with each bite.
What sets Yummy Yummy Take Out apart is their willingness to venture beyond the usual fare found at most Americanized Chinese restaurants. While you can certainly find your classic General Tso’s chicken and sweet and sour pork here, it’s the inclusion of dishes like Sha Cha beef that sets them apart from the rest.
