Bud and Marilyn’s – Philadelphia, PA

Bud and Marilyn’s – Philadelphia, PA

When Celebrity Chef Robert Irvine said on Small Bites Radio that Chef Marcie Turney‏ is one of Philadelphia’s best chefs, I finally took notice. The name was familiar, and I was aware of the restaurant group that Chef Marcie and her partner Valerie Safran ran, and who knows why, but I had never been to one of them. Well I should be ashamed of myself. I like to call myself a foodie, and was missing a big portion of why Philadelphia is receiving so many accolades nationally due to our wonderful restaurant scene with Chef Marcie being one of the driving forces and reasons why.

I decided that my birthday would be a good excuse to make my first visit to one of Chef Marcie’s restaurants. If she is indeed that talented, then why not go during a time that should be celebrated and special. Well I can honestly say, she and her team did not disappoint in the least. The choice was made to dine at Bud and Marilyn’s. It was the chosen destination since I would have my 6 year old son join us, and the menu looked approachable for all palates. As soon as we stepped inside and saw multiple families dining there, I knew things were off to a good start.

From start to finish it was an impeccable experience at Bud and Marilyn’s. The décor is simple and tasteful. The service was flawless. The drinks were strong and mixed to perfection. The food was amazing, and dessert delectable. I can’t say enough of how much fun and how wonderful the meal was. Now don’t get me wrong, Bud and Marilyn’s will not be for everyone. We had American comfort food at its finest, and this type of cuisine is not for everyone. Chef Marcie does this style well, and I am now intrigued to try her other restaurants to sample her versions of Italian, Mexican, and Mediterranean. Give them try, and maybe you will become a fan of Chef Marcie like me and Chef Robert Irvine.

Below is what I had:
Warm Pretzel Rolls, Thai Style Mussels, Fried Cheese Curds, Soft Shell Crabs, Fried Chicken, and Funfetti Cake. They were ALL delicious as could be!

Myrtle Beach Eats 2019

Vietnam House Restaurant – Myrtle Beach, SC

Informal Pan-Asian eatery doling out familiar Chinese & Vietnamese eats in unadorned surrounds. Everything was tasty and service was friendly. I had the fresh spring rolls and shrimp fried rice noodles.

Maggi D’s – Myrtle Beach, SC

3

This is a homey eatery serving straightforward Italian dishes. The bread makes a good sandwich, and their bread is good. I had the Frank “The Bodyguard” which is fried chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, roasted red pepper, and balsamic reduction.

Johnny Rockets – Myrtle Beach, SC

4

Sitting in the heart of the tourist entertainment complex Broadway at the Beach is Johnny Rockets. Service was fast and prices reasonable. I enjoyed an original double burger with a side of fries.

Grand Canyon and Route 66 – 2019

Hualapai Ranch – Grand Canyon West – Western Rim – Peach Springs, AZ

2

Things started out at the Western Rim of the Grand Canyon. The top picture was at Guano Point and this is what you have to do to make sure your child doesn’t veer off and fall off the cliff while you get your picture taken. I didn’t take a picture of the food, but it should be noted. You will get corn on the cob, a salad bar, and roasted chicken if you get your meal at Guano Point. The ranch was a fabulously fun time and we stayed at the cabins on site which were clean and modern and I was happy we stayed overnight. I didn’t know what to expect, but the stay was fantastic. The staff and crew around the area were amazing and beyond friendly. There were tons of games and things to do for the entire family. The dinner on-site was ribs with steamed vegetables, a snack of fireside s’more at night, and the breakfast the following morning was scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. If you have kids, this is a must to do while in the Grand Canyon area and staying overnight is well worth it.

El Tovar Dining Room – Grand Canyon National Park -Southern Rim – Grand Canyon Village, AZ

The El Tovar Dining Room is an elegant American restaurant inside the El Tovar Hotel with Grand Canyon vistas from some tables. Well we were lucky enough to be seated at one of the tables with a view. The view was stunning, service impeccable, and food was delicious from start to finish. I had the signature French onion soup gratinee, crab stack with lump blue claw crabmeat, diced avocado, red onions, diced tomato, fried onion, cilantro oil, and entrée was sautéed duck breast with blueberry compote, roasted red potato, and carrots.

Goldies Route 66 Diner – Route 66 – Williams, AZ

8

Goldies Route 66 Diner is a Casual throwback with 1960s styling offering classic American breakfast, lunch & dinner eats. Once again the theme of this post is me forgetting to take a picture of the food. I can tell you this though. Goldies Route 66 Diner was as good as any famous Jersey or Philadelphia Diner around. I don’t think I’ve ever had a better diner experience outside of Tri-State area. I had delicious marbled rye bread, with over easy eggs, and fried potatoes. The décor is exactly what you want to see and done tastefully with a nice gift shop area, and service was down home and bubbly while being extremely affordable. The town itself is cool to explore as well to spend the day.

Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen – Caesar’s Palace – Las Vegas, NV

With the announcement that future Hell’s Kitchen seasons will be shot on location at his restaurant and filming done at a sound-stage at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, I figured why not stop by the Vegas Strip location. Chef Gordon Ramsay was in and around the area as they are currently filming, so it was interesting to see the setup and how the staff were doing. The ambiance is top notch and they make you feel as though you are in the middle of the show without being cheesy or cheap. I was lucky enough to be seated right in front to get the feel of being in the kitchen and observe all the action going on. The service was impeccable from start to finish, and food was awesome. I had lobster risotto, pan seared scallops, Caesar salad, beef wellington, and an AMAZING sticky toffee pudding.

Chart House – Golden Nugget – Las Vegas, NV

Situated on the extremely eccentric and eclectic Fremont Street where anything you can imagine, you just might see in person, is Chart House inside the Golden Nugget. The setting of the restaurant is absolutely stunning with a 75,000 gallon aquarium surrounding the dining area. From start to finish I was impressed with the meal. The service was perfect and personable, and the food was delicious. I had the lobster bisque, calamari with fired veggies and a side of kimchi sauce that was to die for when added to the appetizer, grilled octopus, and a Chart House prime rib with a side of king crab legs and an order of sautéed mushrooms.

Sam Woo BBQ – Las Vegas, NV

Sam Woo BBQ is a favorite for Hong Kong-style Chinese foods in a casual, no-nonsense setting on the famous Spring Mountain Road in the Chinatown section of Las Vegas where you can get any Asian delight your heart desires. We were treated like family and service was friendly and efficient during our visit. I had the BBQ platter which was roasted duck, roasted pork, and bbq pork and also had their Mongolian Beef and shrimp fried rice. The duck was REALLY good and the both pork items were delicious as well. The Mongolian Beef was tasty. The shrimp fried rice was nice. Only thing I would ask for would be for larger shrimp my shrimp were too tiny and they could have been cooked a little more and seasoned better.

With Derek away traveling and Donato taking a week off, the show will be hosted by Small Bites Radio’s resident Vegan Chef Christina Martin of Cooking to Nourish for some fun and food talk with the guests.

In studio we are very excited to have return one of our favorite chefs, Food Network Chopped Champion Chef Timothy Witcher who had been delighting hungry diners with his restaurant concept The Wing Kitchen at the Wedgwood Country Club. The Wing Kitchen concentrates on great fresh ingredients, simply crafted by expert hands, but embraces a big bold authentic flavor that transcends the chicken wing. Each box of wings, tenders, and fries is an experience. The first few bites will excite, but licking those salty spices and sweet and savory sauces off the fingers is what will keep you coming back!

Then also in studio will be Barry Galasso, a graduate of the Philadelphia Restaurant School. He has been employed at Camden County Technical Schools as a culinary educator since 1997. In his time at the school there have been many accomplishments by students both individually and in team setting through cooking competitions. He has a passion for creating great flavor profiles for food and sharing that knowledge with his students, family, and friends.

What goes with good food? Wine of course! Well the perfect person to come in studio to talk about wine is Zachary Marcus Cesare Harris. For years, while developing a nice palate for wines and meeting a number of great people in the wine industry, he noticed that not only were there virtually no marketing campaigns directed at people of color, but that very few in the industry were trying to develop and educate these demographics earnestly about wine. So he launched his own wine brand called IkaVina Wine and Spirits LLC. He launched this revolutionary wine label so that he can run it his way, but also to market to and develop the virtually untapped consumer base of African Americans, Latino Americans, and Asian Americans with a woman-centric focus. Harris is also talented in music, photography, multimedia, film and video, and has also authored and published three books with a core focus on the issues of love from a man’s perspective.

Mount Masala Himalayan Cuisine Indian Style Restaurant – Voorhees, NJ

Who knew about Himalayan cuisine? Well not me, but let me tell you after my visit I am a huge fan and will be looking to learn and taste more about it. The Beef Manchurian Dry was phenomenal. So much flavor in every bite, the meat was tender, and cooked to perfection. The Shrimp Hakku Bakku Fried Rice was good, and I would have enjoyed it more with jumbo sized shrimp even if I had to pay a little more, but still was tasty and a great side to have with the beef. They really made the visit feel like I was at home with really friendly service, attention to detail, and helping explain the menu. I don’t know what the rest of the menu is like, but I can tell you this was a great meal.
