The Garnet Grill has that casual neighborhood grill vibe where the focus is on hearty portions, comfort food, and bold flavors that don’t overcomplicate things. It’s the kind of spot built around familiar favorites done with a little extra attention to detail. The meal centered on two standout dishes:
Camden Style Cheesesteak This version of a South Jersey classic really comes together thanks to the details. The thinly sliced beef is layered with melted cheese and, most importantly, loaded with sautéed onions that are soft, sweet, and deeply flavorful. Those onions are what really elevate it by adding richness and a slight caramelized sweetness that blends into every bite. All of it is tucked into a soft roll that holds everything together without getting in the way.
Pat’s Piney Sauce Wings The wings bring a different kind of punch as they are crispy, well-coated, and full of flavor. The Pat’s Piney Sauce has a sweet-and-savory profile with just enough tang and edge to keep each bite interesting. They’re sticky, bold, and the kind of wings that disappear quickly once the plate hits the table.
Together, the cheesesteak and wings make for a classic comfort-food combo. One rich and savory with that standout onion depth, the other saucy and flavorful with a bit of kick.

Mexico City hits you all at once in the best possible way. It’s vibrant, chaotic, historic, and endlessly delicious. Staying near the Zócalo, the city’s main square, puts you right in the heart of it all. From centuries-old architecture to bustling markets and some of the best street food on the planet, this area is an unbeatable home base for exploring.
Why Stay Near the Zócalo?
The Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución) is surrounded by landmarks like the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, but what really makes it special is the energy. Step outside your hotel and you’re instantly immersed in daily life with street vendors, musicians, families, and travelers all sharing the same space. From here, you can walk almost everywhere: historic neighborhoods, museums, markets, and most importantly food spots that range from humble street stands to elevated dining experiences.
What to Do Around the Area
Wander the historic streets and admire colonial architecture
Visit nearby museums and cultural sites
Explore Mercado de San Juan for unique local ingredients
Grab a rooftop drink and watch the city buzz below
Eat. Constantly. Seriously, this is a food destination first
Where I Ate (And What You Shouldn’t Miss)
Here’s a breakdown of the standout places I tried with each one memorable in its own way.
Los Cocuyos – Mexico City, Mexico
If you’re chasing legendary tacos, this is the place. The al pastor tacos were absolutely out of this world as they are perfectly seasoned, juicy, and carved fresh. This spot gained fame after being featured by Anthony Bourdain, and it lives up to every bit of the hype.
Santa Clara – Mexico City, Mexico
An ice cream shop that feels like a dream stop on a warm afternoon. They offer tons of flavors, but the pistachio stood out as rich, creamy, and not overly sweet.
Balcón del Zócalo – Mexico City, Mexico
A perfect breakfast with a view. Sitting above the city while enjoying a delicious, well-prepared meal made for a calm and elevated start to the day.
Oaxaca Lindo (Mercado de San Juan Pugibet) – Mexico City, Mexico
A true culinary adventure. I tried chapulines crispy toasted grasshoppers seasoned with garlic, lime, chili, and salt. Surprisingly flavorful and a must-try if you’re feeling adventurous. They also had a variety of unique corn-based snacks.
Quesadillas Bolivar – Mexico City, Mexico
Comfort food at its best. The picadillo quesadilla filled with ground beef, potatoes, carrots, and peas was savory, hearty, and packed with flavor.
Pastelería Ideal – Mexico City, Mexico
The name doesn’t lie. This bakery is massive and full of incredible options cakes, cookies, pastries, breads, and sandwiches. It’s the kind of place where you walk in for one thing and leave with five.
Pollos Ray – Mexico City, Mexico
A must-visit for comfort food done right. The rotisserie chicken is the star—perfectly seasoned with crispy skin and juicy meat—paired with roasted potatoes that soak up all the flavor. Simple, satisfying, and incredibly well executed.
Taqueria Arandas – Mexico City, Mexico
A reliable spot for both tacos and sandwiches. Simple, satisfying, and great when you need a quick bite.
La Frapp – Mexico City, Mexico
A charming rooftop café tucked into the historic center. It’s a great place to relax, sip something refreshing, and take in the surroundings.
Churros Jordan – Mexico City, Mexico
Freshly made churros filled with mango? Yes, please. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfectly sweet.
La Cocina de mi Mamá- Mexico City, Mexico
A comforting, home-style meal. I had fish filet, steak, and chicken mole poblano each dish rich, traditional, and deeply satisfying.
El Chino Palma – Mexico City, Mexico
Fast, casual, and customizable. Think quick-service Chinese. I went with fried rice, mixed veggies, chicken, and honey chicken. Great for something different.
Tacos Hola El Güero – Mexico City, Mexico
The beef guisado here was fantastic as tender, flavorful, and served with that homemade touch that makes all the difference.
Molino El Pujol – Mexico City, Mexico
A unique stop. The avocado taco was something different. It was simple, earthy, and surprisingly satisfying.
Taquería El Jarocho – Mexico City, Mexico
Hands down, the best taco I had in Mexico City. The pork flank paired with a morita chile sauce brought a spicy, smoky depth that made it unforgettable.
Tacos Los Alexis – Mexico City, Mexico
Perfectly cooked steak tacos topped with sautéed onions. Straightforward, but executed flawlessly.
Tizne Tacomotora – Mexico City, Mexico
A standout fusion spot blending Korean and Mexican flavors. The kalbi asada and smoked brisket tacos were bold, smoky, and incredibly creative.
Marisquería y Cervecería HALYAN – Mexico City, Mexico
A great place to wind down. The tarro michelado a beer cocktail served in a frozen mug with salt and chamoy was refreshing and packed with flavor.
Mexico City is a must visit
Mexico City, especially around the Zócalo, is a paradise for anyone who loves food and culture. Every corner offers something new to taste, see, or experience. Whether you’re trying traditional dishes like mole and chapulines or diving into creative fusion tacos, the city rewards curiosity. If you come hungry, you’re doing it right.
