Iron Hill Brewery – Maple Shade, NJ

Iron Hill Brewery – Maple Shade, NJ

Situated a little off the main roads sits Iron Hill Brewery (IHB). It was a zig-zag of roads it seemed to get there, and their sign popped out of nowhere. Once inside the place is gigantic. It is a good thing as a large crowd was already there and they were hopping for lunch service. I can only imagine what happy hour or the weekends look like at IHB. It is no secret IHB’s big draw is beer, but I came here to eat, was with my toddler aged son, and for his mother to approve of this lunch I did not think drinking would be advisable having to drive him home. After a brief overview of IHB from the bubbly server, the order of the day would be their House Smoked Pork Sandwich.

iron hill

The pork sandwich consisted of hickory smoked pulled pork with St. Louis style barbeque sauce on a toasted bun. I must admit that I was not expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised. The pork was moist, not chewy in the least, and had a nice even consistency throughout while the sauce really enhanced and was a joy to eat. The fries were above average, cooked perfectly, and portion size was not an issue in the least.

One of the things that surprised me the most about my visit to IHB was the amount of children present. I second guessed bringing my son there, but once inside they treated him like a rock star, provided him with his own crayon set to keep, and they have one of the best children’s menus I have seen around at a very affordable price.

This was my first time to any IHB as they have many locations, but it will certainly not be my last. They have intrigued me with their menu, quality, fast and friendly service, and most importantly their unique beer selection which I will try next time without bringing the little guy with me.

Cap’N Cats Clam Bar & Tavern – West Deptford, NJ

Cap’N Cats Clam Bar & Tavern – West Deptford, NJ

Cap’N Cats Clam Bar & Tavern (CNC) feels a bit out of place in West Deptford, New Jersey. The exterior and interior of CNC seems more fitted for an on the water back-bay sort of local seafood bar, not a landlocked standalone establishment. Doing the best they can with no water around them, I give CNC credit for doing it up in the middle of nowhere. I just wish they would have given as much thought and energy towards the food as they did the decor.

Ever hear of the saying what goes up, must come down? Well that is how my meal went at CNC. Things started out quite nicely with an order of Steamed Shrimp. They were generous in size, seasoned beautifully, steamed to perfection, and came with a nice cup of melted butter that most places do not give with an appetizer of shrimp. The sweet shrimp combined with the warm salty ooze of the butter had the shrimp just melt in my mouth.

The downhill spiral started to begin my cup of Snapper Soup. The soup was extremely light in any aspects of snapper or seasoning being in the soup and it almost had a taste of being thinned out. I do not know if they were running out of the soup and decided to stretch the last bit out for me or if this is how it is always served. If this is how CNC always serves it I would recommend anyone who has never had snapper soup to try it here first as it is a light version of a very thick and hearty soup that I am used to and if you like CNC’s version of the soup you will love other places that do it even better.

To finish the evening, my scallops with a side of french fries were served. I will begin my rant by stating they were served with double-breaded french fries. Anyone who has followed me in the past knows my feelings of a restaurant copping out by using these cheap incarnations of something resembling a french fry, but are far from it. To make matters worse, the scallops were so overcooked it might have been easier to digest a bouncy ball instead of these things. Scallops are such a wonderful treat to eat when done well, and a terrible tragedy when done wrong. I had such high hopes for CNC after the steamed shrimp, but sadly things ended much worse than they started out.

CNC has a nice bar area and an even nicer seafood display as soon as you open the door to enter. I have a feeling I may have ordered completely wrong at CNC. They call themselves a clam bar and I shied away from eating even one clam from them. If someone was to invite me to have a drink at CNC, I would order the steamed shrimp again and try my luck with something clam related. I could even see myself just buying some fresh seafood from the display case and taking it home to enjoy. I just can not see myself ordering the snapper soup or scallops again.

Honey’s Sit N’ Eat – Philadelphia, PA

Honey’s Sit N’ Eat – Philadelphia, PA

With the gentrification of South Street west of Broad Street came along Honey’s Sit N’ Eat (HSE) just as a HSE came to North 4th Street with the gentrification of the North Liberties neighborhood many years ago. HSE touts an American comfort food menu with breakfast served all day and dishes heavy on nostalgia with locally sourced ingredients. The crowd the day I visited was quite eclectic and seemed HSE was more of a place where to be seen instead as opposed to what should be eaten. I decided to go with the Patty Melt.

honey

The Patty Melt consisted of a burger with swiss cheese and caramelized onions on marbled rye and a side of fries. The burger was nice, but slightly dry and completely overcooked as it was well done and I asked for it to be medium. The fries also were overcooked in a major way as instead of having the consistency of a French fry they had the feel of potato stix as they were beyond crispy, they were dehydrated and hard.  It was such a shame as the caramelized onions were beyond wonderful. Some of the best I have had anywhere, and  I do not see French Onion Soup listed on their menu, but I would be first in line to try it if they put that quality of caramelized onions in the soup and wonder why more menu items do have them included. The rye was grilled well and had a nice consistency to it showing that the bread was fresh, not overcooked, and holding up well throughout the meal.

HSE had such a high with the onions and such a low with the fries and overcooked burger. What I ordered was basic and there really is no excuse for the way it was executed. The staff seemed a little standoffish to me, but very welcoming to those who were obviously regulars. They were one step up with the onions and many steps back on many other fronts. I would give them another try, but nothing is having me rush back anytime soon.

The Farm & Fisherman Tavern + Market – Cherry Hill, NJ

The Farm & Fisherman Tavern + Market – Cherry Hill, NJ

Just because a dining destination is great or successful in Philadelphia does not mean that it will translate well over the bridge in New Jersey and vice versa. With keeping this in mind, Chef/Owner Josh & Colleen Lawler have done it right with The Farm & Fisherman Tavern + Market (FF) in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Realizing that as wonderful as their Farm and Fisherman Restaurant in Philadelphia is, with them living in New Jersey they knew it would not be the right fit to just duplicate what they have in Philly to Jersey. They had to come up with something a little bit different, but with the integrity and mission statement they hold dear, and with that in mind came the concept for FF. I came for lunch and I would get things started with a beer I do not see offered much in places around Jersey and is one of my favorites for summertime, 21st Amendment Brewery’s Hell Or High Watermelon Wheat Beer with a snack of 24-Hour Onion Dip & Chips.

beer

chips and dip

I could not have asked for a better way to start things off. The chips were some of the best around, and the dip was by far and away one of the best dips I have ever had. The onions were so flavorful and cooked just right, and I guess from having them stew in the dip for 24-Hours just made it all that much better. The beer and chips were dangerous combination and one that if I could eat regularly could cause my doctor to not be very pleased with me. The next order of business on my to-do list would be their Smoked and Grilled Wings.

smoked and grilled wings

The wings had a nice smoke flavor to them, grilled nicely, and the sauce and cheese on the bottom of the dish really complimented themselves perfectly. The only downfall was that the wings were a little tough and rubbery. They did not pull apart nicely, and the meat stuck to the bone a little too much. I think I may have just had a bad batch with the cooking temp or timing being slightly off, because with the quality in flavors and effort that was put into preparing them, I find it hard to believe this is how they are served regularly. Even with the minor flaw, these wings were still by far and away much better than your standard order of wings at a bar, so do not let my criticism steer you away from trying them. To end my lunch I would have the Turkey Ruben with Swiss cheese and local sauerkraut on Rye with a side of fries.

turkey ruben

The turkey meat was fabulous, the rye was better than most, just the right amount of Swiss cheese melted on point, and the fries were delicious and cooked perfectly. My only complaint would be that the sauerkraut was ice cold. I would have enjoyed if it was thrown on the grill to warm up. The difference in temperature distracted from the overall experience, texture, and maybe even if it was just subconsciously to me the flavor. Even though that could have been different, I really enjoyed my time at FF. The service and staff were very efficient and accommodating, bar area is beautiful, ambiance is relaxing, and the tiny market is amazing with some neat local foodie products to take home and enjoy. FF provided me with one of the best lunch experiences around the South Jersey area.

El Sitio Grill & Cafe – Collingswood, NJ

El Sitio Grill & Cafe – Collingswood, NJ

Strolling down Haddon Avenue in Collingswood, New Jersey your eyes
and nose are in for a treat. This street has a little bit of
everything for everyone and since I had never eaten at El Sitio Grill & Cafe
(ES) before I decided to give them a try for lunch. The inside is
very relaxing with a nice ambiance and mood about the place and
they have a large, if not the largest outdoor seating space of any
of Collingswood’s restaurants. ES starts your experience off with a
dish of Olive Oil sauteed mushrooms and herbs and fresh bread.

el sitio olive oil

I could have eaten ten dishes of this stuff, it was that good. It
was a nice change of pace from the normal and a great beginning.
My appetizer would be Argentinean Style Empanadas.

el sitio empanada

My Argentinean Style Empanadas consisted of wheat flour empanadas
stuffed with seasonings, fresh vegetables, herbs, chicken, and
beef. I went with the chicken and beef all in one since I could
not decide on which version I wanted more and my server
recommended to put them all in one. Well kudos to my well-informed
server, because they were fantastic this way and I highly suggest
any meal at ES to start out with them. My lunch entrée would be
the El Sitio Burger.

el sitio burger

The El Sitio Burger was beef, cheese, breaded onions, and homemade
BBQ Sauce. I will start out with the good. The fresh breaded
onions were fantastic and some of the best I have had in a long
time and the homemade bbq sauce was great. It gave the entire
burger a very nice distinct flavor unlike other burgers I have
had. It was not overpowering, yet it was strong enough to let you
know it was someone special and out of the ordinary. Now sadly on
to the bad. The roll was stale and just fell apart with each bite.
I requested my burger to be done medium, and it came out VERY well
done. It was served with provolone cheese. Not to say that I do
not enjoy a burger with provolone cheese, but this was not the
burger to be putting it on. It just put the flavor profile all out
of whack. Last but not least, the burger was served with the
dreaded double breaded french fry. Please I beg of all restaurants
to throw them in the trash, and either make your own or buy a
higher grade of french fry.

ES had their ups and downs, but I really did enjoy their ups
allowing me to slightly overlook their downs. The service was very
pleasant and efficient, prices were affordable, and they are
providing dishes not seen everywhere done well for the most part.
If they can keep an eye on the freshness of their rolls, be a
little more aware of overcooking their burgers, not putting
provolone cheese on them, and get a fresh french fry coming out of
the kitchen, ES has the potential to go from a place people are
talking about them for having dishes that are a little different then the
norm, to start talking about them having dishes you have to see and eat
to believe because of how good they are.

Venice Italian Eatery – Pitman, NJ

Venice Italian Eatery – Pitman, NJ

Pitman, New Jersey seems to be in the news in the Philadelphia area around every December. With their “Keep Christ in Christmas” sign adoring the main street of town to the “Keep Saturn in Saturnalia” sign on the other side of town opposing each others view they are at least keeping their name relevant either way. My question was what goes on the other eleven months of the year?

Well Pitman is set up to be more than just a discussion during the holidays. With their Broadway Theater having entertainment all year with some top-notch performances, a few nice shops to buy odds and ends, and a main street with quite a few dining options they have a little something for everyone it seems. I decided to stop and grab a bite to eat at Venice Italian Eatery (VIE).

The wait staff was very down home and the large majority of patrons seem to come to VIE for their pizza and sandwiches. I was in the mood for a full meal, so I started things out with their Escarole Soup.

Venice Escrole Soup

Their version of Escarole Soup was of the red variety giving it more of minestrone feel to me since the white beans were missing and escarole almost invisible. The soup was not bad, and it was not great either. It was just not really anything I can think of that an escarole soup should be and did not stand out in any fashion. The fresh bread really helped out with the dipping cup of seasoned olive oil. I would follow-up the soup with chicken marsala.

venice chicken marsala

The chicken marsala was not plated in way that would win any presentation awards, but what it did have was a fantastic down home feel to the meal. The broccoli were nice and fresh and drowned in the butter, lemon, and herbs that it was sauteed in and the chicken was tender and marsala sauce had a nice tone to it with a generous serving of mushrooms to go along and with the nice fresh rolls they provided earlier it really was a joy to sop up all the sauce with the rolls. I could tell that everything was cooked when I ordered and nothing was sitting around. The dish would not pass in most fine dining establishments, but for a location that eighty percent of the menu consisted of pizzeria fare, I was pleasantly surprised. I would end the meal with Boston Cream Pie.

venice boston creme pie
The pitfall of my time at VIE would be the pie. It was obviously very old with the flavor of freezer burn in every bite and the cream did not resemble cream anymore. The only highlight of the dessert would be the whipped cream that topped it.

VIE was very affordable with some definite highs and definite lows of service. I felt like family the minute I set foot inside and everything had a home meal sort of vibe. I would love to go to a show at the theater and walk across the street to enjoy a meal at VIE either before or afterwards. Just make sure you go out for dessert somewhere else.

Terra Nova Restaurant and Wine Bar – Sewell, NJ

Terra Nova Restaurant and Wine Bar – Sewell, NJ

Terra Nova (TN) feels more like three restaurants in one, especially with how large they are and how many room are in TN, than one cohesive establishment. The menu is almost exhausting to read with everything from soups, salads, Italian dishes, all the way to sushi, and a heavy influx of wine selections.

I started out with the Onion Soup with roasted garlic and gruyere. Now this is not French Onion Soup even though it closely looks like it and has the same setup and texture, but the flavor profile is slightly different and a nice change of pace. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to start your meal off with.

terra nova onion soup

Next was the Bang-Bang Tempura Shrimp. Ringing in at $13 it was a little disappointing to only get four regular sized shrimp on the dish. The shrimp were lightly battered covered in a sweet and chili sauce. The sauce was nice, but the shrimp could have been a little more numerous or larger in size in my opinion and sadly they were slightly overcooked creating a minor rubbery effect on the shrimp.

terra nova bang shrimp

For the main course I went with the Pan Seared Diver Scallops. It was displayed on the menu as having crab, leek and potato hash, and haricot vert (green beans). What it did not state was it coming out served like a soup. The scallops were decent as was the amount of crab meat served, but the plating was horrendous as was the amount of liquid making my meal float. The entire dish had a singular flavor since everything else was drowned out by the cream sauce covering the dish as well as well as a massive amount of potatoes served. They really need to review what they want this dish to be and execute it a little better.

terra nova scallops
To finish things off was your standard creme brulee. It was a nice way to finish the night, but was they did not do anything to enhance it out of the ordinary.

terra nova creme brulee

TN had their share of ups and downs. It was not a perfect meal at TN, but it was by far not terrible either. The experience I had at TN seems to suggest they would be a nice place for group outings, but not somewhere I would call a must go to location. The menu may need an overhaul and the kitchen could use some help sending out plates to look a little more appeasing and not so soupy.

Beach House Grille – Ocean City, NJ

Beach House Grille – Ocean City, NJ

The New Jersey shoreline is world famous and is trying to get their groove back after Hurricane Sandy wrecked havoc up and down the coast. Some places of the Jersey Shore are back better than others, and Ocean City seems to be completely recovered from the storm. I did not get to see how things looked during the summer rush as I am not a fan of summertime shore traffic so a off-season visit to Ocean City, NJ brought me to check the town out and to Beach House Grille (BHG) for lunch.

BHG is very down home, the service was friendly, and the menu is straightforward. No big surprises in the food department here, but the place was more than half filled even during the off-season. My order would be grilled patty melt with fries.

beach house grill

The patty melt was cooked medium as requested, just the right amount of cheese, and rye bread grilled perfectly. The one surprise was the large crinkle cut fries just like the ones available on the boardwalk. The price point was very affordable so I can see why the locals like BHG. BHG is not breaking any barriers when it comes to their food, but if you want a basic meal that will not break the bank while visiting a shore town BHG is not a bad spot to stop.

Rexy’s Restaurant and Bar – West Collingswood Heights, NJ

Rexy’s Restaurant and Bar – West Collingswood Heights, NJ

Certain restaurants gain notoriety because of good food, others
gain it because of their patrons. Rexy’s is one of the places that
became famous because of who was there. Rexy’s became the place to
be in the early 1970’s to spot the hockey team Philadelphia Flyers
players after games. Rexy’s really became a landmark after the
Flyers won the Stanley Cup Championship and the team was to go
there to celebrate at Rexy’s, but with over 8,000 screaming fans
awaiting their arrival closing the streets, climbing on Rexy’s
roof and causing mayhem, the local police were required to call
in the riot squads to subdue the crowds and then owner of Rexy’s
Pat Fietto had to divert the party to Compton’s Log Cabin instead.
After the win Fietto created a sort of shrine room of the Flyers
and all of the players who hung out at Rexy’s with memorabilia and
pictures of the players hanging out at Rexy’s adoring the walls of
the room from floor to ceiling.

In 2008 Fietto decided it was time for him to step away from the
restaurant business and sold Rexy’s to the Lembesis Family. The
Lembesis’s kept Rexy’s as it was until 2011 and then did a
complete overhaul of the location changing the entire design of
the interior and exterior giving it a Tuscan flair and adding a
new outdoor patio. Being a Flyers fan I used to love to dine in
the shrine room, but let me tell you the change really was for the
better. This place is gorgeous. The only resemblance of the old
Rexy’s is about four pictures from the shrine room hanging on the
wall where the new bar sits.

I started out with their Cheesesteak Spring Rolls. The rolls were
nice and crisp on the outside, with a nice spicy ketchup provided
to dip into, and frizzled onions on the side. It was not only
executed nicely and tasted good, it was a decent enough sized
appetizer for two people.

rexys cheesesteak roll

To get the actual meal started our server brought out fresh and
warm bread. The bread really was a step above most bread offered
at other dining locations and really was a bright spot. It is
sometimes the smallest thing like bread that can start the meal
off on the right foot. Next came out my Crab and Corn Chowder.

rexys crab and corn chowder

I began the soup thinking it was not that good, but after a few
bites I changed my mind. The seasoning was very minimal which at
first made me think the chowder was too bland, but then after a
few bites, I noticed the bowl was generously filled with nice
pieces of lump crab meat. With the chowder having such a light
flavor, it really allowed the sweetness of the crab meat to shine
instead. Not everything needs to be bold, and this is one of those
times. The only down fall of this dish would be the one piece of
garlic bread sitting on the side of the bowl. It was burnt beyond
recognition, and I would have been much happier with a small
amount of oyster crackers. My main entree Pork Italino is what
followed.

Rexys Pork Italiano

This was a dish of major ups and downs. The fresh vegetables were
phenomenal. Sautéed and seasoned beautifully other places should
take note of how a nicely cooked vegetable dish can truly enhance a
meal. The pork on the other hand was a tad dry and the broccoli
rabe that topped it was so bitter I thought I someone hid sour
patch kids under the cheese. The mashed potatoes would have been
better suited as just a scoop or two on the side of the dish as
opposed to sitting the pork on top of a pile of them, but the
gravy was delicious.

So Rexy’s meal was a little roller coaster like, but I must say it was the best meal I was ever served there. I used to go to Rexy’s for the memories of Flyers glory days and look at all the great pictures, but now I may have a reason to go there just to eat. The entire staff was friendly and service went seamlessly, now only if the kitchen can do the same. It was a good meal, but I know if they apply themselves they could serve something great and maybe one day have all of us over to celebrate another Flyers Stanley Cup victory.

Max’s Seafood Café – Gloucester City, NJ

Max’s Seafood Café – Gloucester City, NJ

Not many places have been around since 1890. Well Max’s Seafood Café (MSC) is one of them. A shoe store when it first opened, a saloon starting in 1912, and then seafood joint beginning in 1977, MSC has quite a long and storied history. MCS was closed briefly from 1998 through 2001 with new owners overhauled the building restoring the plate-glass windows, tin ceiling, designed a private dining area with a fireplace, and created a two thousand bottle wine cellar. With such a storied history, the building MSC sits in has created different memories for many generations of families. MSC sits in a completely residential part of town and can easily be missed if you are not familiar with the area. Parking around the area is curbside street parking, but MSC has a nice parking lot with free parking directly across the street from their establishment which is a nice touch. The interior is very nice and immediately brings back memories of old saloons you have seen in the movies. My visit to MSC would be lunch and my order of the day would be Lobster Roll.

max's lobster roll

The Lobster Roll was fresh lobster meat, blanched celery, tarragon aioli on a toasted bun accompanied by fresh-cut fries. I must say I was pleasantly surprised at the decent amount of meat provided in the roll especially since my meal was half of the cost of other restaurants that have offered the same thing in Philadelphia. The tarragon aioli really provided a nice touch. It did not overpower the sweet lobster meat, yet added to and enhanced the overall flavor profile of the roll.  The fries were good, and much better than then double breaded fries, but the menu stated they were to be old bay fries and they were as plain as could be. When I asked my server, he responded  with “the kitchen was having a rough day and must have missed that part”.

I really enjoyed my lunch at MCS and must say I was impressed with the overall cost and quality I received. The service was spotty as big lags were experienced between service, drink fill ups, not getting old bay fries, and a long wait for the check and change even though the lunch crowd was light. These are things that can be easily rectified with a staff meeting and service refresher from management and a little more attention to detail from the kitchen. MSC had me leave happier than I entered so even with their flaws that day, I would go back to try other things off of MSC’s lunch or dinner menu, and cap my visit off with a few drinks at their beautiful bar.
