Myrtle Beach Eats

So Small Bites Radio made a visit down to Myrtle Beach, SC for some fun in the sun and eats around town. Below are some of the places we ate at and recommend for you to try if you are in the area.

Thrashers – Atlantic City Airport – Atlantic City, NJ

Airport food is usually bland and predictable, but I must admit a bacon, egg, and cheese on bagel here was made fresh and good start.

Joe’s Diner by the Airport – Myrtle Beach, SC

Hey, we’re from the Philly/South Jersey area so you say diner and we’re in. This patty melt was good.

Ducatis Pizzeria & Trattoria – Myrtle Beach, SC

From start to finish the meal was tasty

Empire Fire Mongolian Grill – Myrtle Beach, SC

A very affordable meal, with a nice variety, and decent service. It was sort of a buffet, but done differently. Still good for the price though.

Conch Cafe – Murrells Inlet, SC

This place was AMAZING! The view is fantastic, the food was fresh, and delicious. I highly recommend a visit here.

Toffino’s Italian Bakery & Deli – Myrtle Beach, SC

Did someone say scrapple? You must know we’re from Philly. Oh, and it was eaten quickly!!!

Scully’s New Orleans Style Sno-Balls – Murrells Inlet, SC

I’m used to Philly Water Ice, but if this is what they serve in New Orleans, I’ll take this as well. Nice treat on a hot day. I had the blue raspberry. WARNING – it turned my teeth and tongue blue for the rest of the day.

Miyabi Japanese Restaurant – Myrtle Beach, SC

Had a really enjoyable meal here. Nice atmosphere, friendly and efficient service, and yummy food.

Meyer’s Ice Cream Palor – Surfside Beach, SC

Had a Hershey’s banana pudding ice cream flavor milkshake and boy was it good. Then when you’re done, the place has an arcade inside. How could you possibly not love this place?

The Original Little Pigs Hickory Smoked Bar-B-Q and Catering – 3901 Dick Pond Rd, Myrtle Beach, SC

Now this was great BBQ! Beware though, their are a few Little Pigs BBQ around, this is the original and it is delicious and worth a visit for sure.

Scatori’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant – Myrtle Beach, SC

Better than average food and nice ambiance. The garlic knots were really good, but ate them all before I thought of taking a picture.

There you have it. A nice food itinerary during any visit to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. ENJOY!

Philly Gringos visit La Habana

Philly Gringos visit La Habana

20170417_181339

A lot can happen in sixty years. A man walked on the moon. People started to watch television in color. Doctors stopped recommending smoking. There have been inventions from Atari, Apple, and Microsoft. The internet was invented. We have driverless cars. And can you believe it, businesses and citizens from the United States (under certain regulations) are allowed to visit and do business in Cuba again?

Everything I mentioned certainly happened in the United States and many other places around the world, but for better or worse Cuba is a touch like visiting what it was like to live sixty years ago. This is not to say that Cuba is not modern, as they certainly are, just not at the level most Americans are used to. The majority of cars are classic cars, many houses are well “worn” and patchworked in order to be livable. The internet is not easy to access. If and when you do find access, it is not reliable. Finding information of where someplace is or where to eat is not a “Google” or “Yelp” search. Everyone recommends that you ask a taxi driver. Many people respond, “Taxi should know, they know everywhere.” These were just a few minor adjustments and I actually enjoyed them. What I saw and loved that was really different was the absolute lack of visual and audible garbage advertisements and constant grab for attention from some sort of marketing, while walking and driving. It was a relief. You could view the world as is, without trying to be sold something. You would see many kids running around playing, not staring at screens of one sort or another, with nothing but pure joy on their faces. Nature is embraced. Food was fresh and delicious, and the lack of junk food was welcomed instead of having it pushed in your face at every convenience store. The people were extremely warm and hospitable especially when they found out we were from the United States. They assumed we were Dutch (which I took as I compliment, since it meant that I did not stand out as a typical American tourist). When we said we were from the United States, a millisecond of shock registered on their faces, but immediately afterward most would respond, “We are so happy you came to see our home for yourself. Please tell your friends to visit as well.”

Our main base during our stay was the Starwood Hotels and Resorts brand “Four Points by Sheraton” the first American hotel and leisure company, headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut to offer hospitality on the island. The resort is situated in the affluent Miramar district of Havana. The pool area was beautiful, the staff extremely friendly, the room spacious, and the breakfast buffet was varied and tasty. By Cuban standards these were very high end accommodations. For the rack room rate of $800 a night (around $500 a night online), one certainly expects more though. This may change over time as it is evident Starwoods is working hard to improve the conditions and services offered at the resort, but certain aspects of the stay just do not make the grade yet. They may be better suited to offer concessions of some sort for booking Four Points Havana that you can use at another resort worldwide or Starwoods points credit to be used at a later date.

I am happy I was able to visit Cuba now. You can tell Cuba is changing and it will look a lot different in the near future. In Miramar there are signs showing that a sandy beach is going to be built where a beautiful natural reef exists now. In Old and Central Havana, China is building hotels, rebuilding the markets, docks, and train stations in several locations around the city. The agreement, as we were told, is that China is going to completely own these properties which was previously unheard of in Cuba. They have been permitted to use Chinese workers and bring in Chinese products and produce. This could be a deal with the devil as the United States knows all too well. I checked the labels of everything we were consuming and purchasing, it was comforting to see that at least eighty percent of everything we were using or buying was directly grown, produced, or made in Cuba. When dealing with China, this will change rapidly and probably not for the better, when it comes to the quality of products or economic gain for the people of Cuba.

To be able to walk, talk, eat, and be entertained in a mostly socialist style economic system was a priceless and educational experience. There are no easy answers to which lifestyle is better or worse. It is not possible to weigh which is right and which is wrong. Even after traveling the world, visiting all seven continents, the solutions to obtain peace, decent wages, and standards or rules for fair housing are still elusive. Whether it be democracy, republic, autocracy, dictatorship, or communism one would have to assume there must be a middle ground somewhere that could make utopia on earth possible. Information is power, and hopefully with more people connected to each other, this dream, this compromise, could one day become a reality.

Even with the proliferation of cell phones, it was surprising that at some locations, it was not recommended or forbidden to take pictures. The answer was not given as to why, nor did I ask. I would assume it is because they do not want anything that could be construed as negative to spread or be seen by others. I experienced this before in China and certain parts of Africa where quite frequently you were told cameras had to be put down or turned off, but everything I saw in Cuba was positive and nowhere near the atrocities that we hear about in parts of Philadelphia or Camden on a daily basis. Yes, certain areas were more economically distressed than others and some unsavory characters were present, but at no time did I feel threatened or unsafe in any manner during our visit.

Derek returns from WWE WrestleMania events, and is back in studio, and then leaves for Cuba next week returning May 7th, but enough about Derek. This week we have Guinness World Records holder Panorama at Penn’s View Hotel who has one of the world’s largest wine selections. Chef Matt Gentile, will be happy to talk about wine, but he is the genius behind the delicious food that even Philadelphia Inquirer restaurant critic Craig LaBan gave 3 bells to.

Then we have FUEL. Fuel was the First restaurant to offer a full menu under 500 Calories. Fuel features a delicious menu of panini, wraps, salads, rice power bowls, and more all made fresh with 100% organic ingredients. We use only the best local ingredients and many grown right in our own greenhouse in Philadelphia. Fuel also features a juice bar and coffee bar to quench all your thirst needs.

Also joining us will be Chef Anthony Bonett of Moshulu down the street from The Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing. Their deck is opening up and they have just completed extensive renovations throughout the ship and kitchen, and Chef Anthony will tell us about some of their menu specials.

NBC News – NBC Latino recognized Chef Hugo Campos of Philabundance PCK will be in studio as well to talk about healthy tips.

To show we are hip and happening we also have Jack Pattillo of Rooster Teeth on to talk about Let’s Play Live which brings your favorite YouTube entertainers to one stage for a non-stop frenzy of gaming and comedy. Prepare to laugh your asses off at the idiots from Achievement Hunter and FunhausTeam, doing what they do best (and worst). It’s all of the insanity and energy of a rock show, but without the annoying drugs, vomit, and nudity. Get your tickets so you don’t miss out because it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on April 24, 2017!

American Whiskey Convention – Philadelphia, PA

American Whiskey Convention

(The following is a special series on Bluejeanfood.com written by guest contributing writer and correspondent for “Small Bites Radio” William Knowles. He highlights his passions of trying something new whenever the opportunity presents itself, or possibly something old, but new again since it has been a while. I hope you enjoy his very special perspective that I am sure many of you can relate to. Follow him on his exciting journey “Around Town”)

On Friday evening, March 24th, I had the good fortune of attending an event in the luxury Hall of Fame Club at Citizens Bank Park.  The home of the Phillies had no ball games on this night, but instead hosted the country’s finest distillers and distributors for the American Whiskey Convention.

During the course of the event, I was able to sample some of the best whiskeys and bourbons around, with over 50 vendor’s present.  Some of the most well known names in the biz were there – Jim Beam, Jack Daniel’s, Evan Williams, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey and Buffalo Trace were all onsite.  The true highlight of these events though is the opportunity to try something new, or maybe have never even heard of…

Among the many tastes that I sampled from others not as well know, but regardless had an equal (if not superior) product were: Wigle, Big Spring Spirits, Whistlepig, Filibuster, Hidden Still Spirits, Manayunk Moonshine, Bulleit Bourbon, Five Saints, Hewn, Calumet Farm, Rittenhouse Rye and George Dickel.  All of the representatives were enthusiastic and eager to discuss their product and demonstrate what makes them unique…

Food was generously spread out for enjoyment, with some of the vendors bringing their special whiskey based creations.  Masey & Leigh maple syrup manufacturers showed off their spread of whiskey and rye syrups, which were awesome to taste.  John & Kira’s Chocolates, a local favorite, had some bourbon infused treats.  There also were numerous exhibits showing how whiskey is distilled; book, craft and novelty items for sale, as well as tasting contests…

Many notable guests were on hand for the events to discuss their craft.  Jimmy Russell (of Wild Turkey fame), noted author Lew Bryson, historian Fred Minnick and others presided over forums about their love of the drink, and their thoughts on modern day distilling.

The event was well worth attending if you enjoy all things whiskey, and had a great turn out.  The organizers did a fine job in utilizing the unique setting of this part of the ballpark to make the evening even more special.  Keep your eyes peeled for the next convention of this sort, “around town”…and I will see you there!

He also runs Burg at Military Park in Newark, New Jersey next to New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). Chef Chris’s restaurants have been named one of the Best in New Jersey 6 years in a row by New Jersey Monthly Magazine. Also, Chef Chris’s menus have garnered praise from The New York Times, Crain’s New York Business, WCBS Newsradio 880, GAYOT.com – The Guide to the Good Life, The Wall Street Journal and Inside Jersey.

Good food deserves a good drink, but you say you want to have your cake and eat it too. Well your in luck! Full Spirited Flavours – Liqueur Cakes, one of the best known liquor infused bakery’s that ships cakes worldwide and is based in the Philly area will be visiting us. Owners Sue Katein, Carole Algier, and Kathy Lanyon here to tell us how this match made in heaven happens.

Food, booze, and cake sounds like a party to me, and what kind of a party is better than a PIZZA PARTY? Well the crew from Visit Valley Forge’s marketing team Dan Weckerly and Joe Tacynec is also joining us in studio as they slice through the competition to find out which local pie is primo in Montco’s Best Pizza Tourney. The tourism board launched a bracketed competition – NCAA March Madness-style – pitting 64 pizza palaces against each other and down to the final 8. The best-pizza topic reached more than 400,000 people on Facebook, and its associated YouTube videos were watched more than 80,000 times.

Each of the 64 contenders was also given a marketing kit, delivered by hand in a carton that resembled a personal pizza box. Inside were giveaway magnets, a pad of tear-off voting requests (to accompany customers’ checks) and a copy of Crave, the VFTCB’s award-winning dining guide. Chiaro’s Pizza & Restaurant was winner last year and is still in the running this year against Vinny’s Pizzarama, Bacco Restaurant, Penny’s Pizza, Nippers Bar and Pizza, BRAVO PIZZA WORCESTER, Nicoletta KOP, and Angelo’s Pizza. Who will win???

STILL NOT ENOUGH??? We’ll also have Actor John DiRenzo in studio to talk about his recent visits to The Halal Guys, The Florida Keys & Key West cook off at The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College , Garces Group Wedding Showcase, and Garces Foundation’s Garces Foundation 2017 Benefit this Friday at Loews Philadelphia Hotel.

Don’t forget we still have our regular weekly segments from Courier-Post nightlife correspondent and The New York Times recognized John Howard-Fusco for his news of the week and please remember that John’s new book “A Culinary History of Cape May: Salt Oysters, Beach Plums & Cabernet Franc” from Arcadia Publishing The History Press will be available April 3rd, Chef Barbie Marshall who is a Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen finalist and was named Pennsylvania’s most influential chef by Cooking Light with her tip of the week, and joke of the week from legendary joke teller Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling of The Howard Stern Show fame and Jackie Martling is releasing his autobiography “The Joke Man: Bow to Stern” from Post Hill Press with foreword by Artie Lange and is available to pre-order on Amazon.com . I-CE-NY at Chinatown Square Food Hall

I-CE-NY at Chinatown Square Food Hall

(The following is a special series on Bluejeanfood.com written by guest contributing writer and correspondent for “Small Bites Radio” William Knowles. He highlights his passions of trying something new whenever the opportunity presents itself, or possibly something old, but new again since it has been a while. I hope you enjoy his very special perspective that I am sure many of you can relate to. Follow him on his exciting journey “Around Town”)

I-CE-NY, a new dessert establishment located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Chinatown, held a tasting event on Wednesday, March 15th. I was invited to enjoy their offerings; some of which I have heard of, but have never had the opportunity to try before…

“Rolled ice cream” is something that has taken off recently in the States. The operators of I-CE-NY claim origination of the process and treat in Thailand. The preparation is interesting in itself to watch. The expert staff begin by using flavored milks which they pour onto a frigid circular dish (temperature well below zero). As the milk freezes up, it is crafted using spatulas and small knives, ultimately leading to the “rolls”. Additional toppings are added as requested, as they are in any great ice cream bar.

We tried the St. Patty’s Day special, with mint ice cream and Lucky Charms. The result is unique and more gratifying then your normal every day scoop. Strawberry and banana was next on the list, and the flavor was bold and fresh. The combinations are endless, with many different ice cream bases and toppings to choose from.

I-CE-NY takes the experience to added heights with a friendly, outgoing staff. Their bright, clean shop is located in the new Chinatown Square Food Hall, which is home to numerous new eateries specializing in Thai, Korean, Middle Eastern and Cambodian cuisine, among others. I was impressed by the wide variety of offerings, as well as the set up of the court. This will surely become a destination for those looking to try new and varied offerings for lunch and dinner in the coming months, especially with warm weather approaching…

Visit our friends at I-CE-NY soon, and I will see you there and elsewhere “Around Town”…

ABOUT THE GARCES FOUNDATION:

In 2012, the Garces Foundation was founded to support Philadelphia’s immigrant community, particularly employees of Philadelphia’s hospitality industry and their families. The foundation raises funds to provide this community with medical, educational and nutritional programming. The goal is to help Philadelphia’s immigrants take advantage of these resources so that they may actively contribute their talents to making this city truly world-class.

The foundation currently runs three of its own programs that improve the health, language, cultural skills, and nutrition of this community. The first is a quarterly Community Health Day where uninsured patients can receive free dental care, physicals, and medical screenings. The second is an applied learning English as a second language class for restaurant workers, English for the Restaurant and Everyday Living, which aims to narrow the language and cultural gap in the workplace and beyond. Last, the foundation hosts summer Luna Farm Field Trips to the Garces family farm, where children grow and harvest fruits and vegetables, cook their own healthy lunch from the produce they harvest, and practice fun ways to exercise.
