I must admit I am very happy that this place is called South Jersey Soft Pretzel. The reason for this is because it is very different from a Philly Style pretzel, but it is great all its own and enjoyed the South Jersey twist on it. If they were claiming to be a Philly Pretzel, I would say wrong, but a South Jersey Pretzel I’m 100% behind. The pretzels is softer, and little chewier, but still delicious.

The Original Mart Soft Pretzel Bakery – Cinnaminson, NJ

The Original Mart Soft Pretzel Bakery – Cinnaminson, NJ

#SmallBitesRadio has been named the #14 Top Hospitality Programs on the Planet in 2020 and 2021 and #Bluejeanfood.com has been named #23 Top Philadelphia Lifestyle Blogs, Websites & Influencers of 2021

The Pennsauken Mart may be long lost, almost forgotten, and to younger generation completely unknown. What has never left though thank goodness is The Original Mart Soft Pretzel Bakery and soft pretzel fans have reason to rejoice. These are great!

Below is from The Original Mart Soft Pretzel Bakery:

In 1965, a retired Philadelphia fireman undertook a venture that would establish a family legacy of the best pretzels in the tri-state area. Understanding the value of his wife Cass’s closely-guarded recipe, he founded Cass’ Soft Pretzel Bakery. The bakery was an instant success, drawing crowds of hungry locals with its distinct blend of airy, dutch-style pretzels and hometown charm

Mr. Fraser would soon pass his bakery onto his sons, and during this time Cass’ popularity became something akin to legend. Businessmen, hipsters, suburbanites and city-dwellers flocked to the Pennsauken Mart for the Frasers’ unique combination of hometown service and hearty (but fat-free!) indulgence.

After years of service to the community, Cass’ Soft Pretzel Bakery was forced to shut its doors due to the demolition of the site on which the original store was founded. Fearing the worst, customers sent emails and messages by the thousands, demanding the outfit reopen its doors. And, little more than a year after the Mart closed, Cass’ Soft Pretzels were reborn!

Now known as Mart Pretzels (an homage to the community-driven marketplace that we all knew and loved), we continue our tradition of service to the community in Cinnaminson and beyond. We’ve made some changes we think you’ll enjoy, like our expanded menu, party-tray options, and uniquely satisfying pretzel-sandwich offerings – but we also understand the importance of maintaining that taste you know and love. This is why we still use the same oven to bake our world-famous pretzels and continue the family tradition through Sandra and Shaughnessy Fraser, daughter and son of proprietors Don and Julia. Even Half-Price Marty crowns the wall above the counter, reminding customers that although the name and location might have changed, our commitment to quality remains the same.

I will go on the record and say that this place serves the closest old-school Philadelphia style version of a soft pretzel outside of Philadelphia. These are the pretzels of my youth sold by vendors on the corner of the street with the pretzels sitting in the paper bag and most times you’d see the vendor picking their nose, sneezing, hacking, or coughing but we still bought them and thought they were delicious. These type of pretzel bakeries are becoming fewer and fewer as convenience stores and chains make it hard for them to survive. Take my word and get your next order of pretzels from A & A. In great news, they are opening a brick and mortar retail location in Oaklyn, New Jersey so you will soon be able to buy them there also.

In the mood for sushi and on the go? Then Sushi Express is right up your alley. Order online for quick pick up and be on your way. Prices are decent and food quality was good. If in the area or using Delsea Drive to get to the shore via Route 55 this is a good choice. I had the chicken hibachi, clear soup, seaweed salad, pork gyoza, kani, unagi, red snapper, octopus, and Philly roll.

With many awards for best sushi and even legions of fans who cross the bridge from Philadelphia to South Jersey Sagami has been a perennial favorite of many. There is a good reason why. They are putting out some of the freshest and highest quality product you can ask for. The prices may be a little higher than other places, but you just can’t get what they are offering elsewhere. Period! I had their Negimako, Shumai, Unaju, Anago, King Crab Sushi, Hamachi Maki, Soft Shell Crab Roll, Hotate, Philadelphia Roll. and Chicken Teriyaki.

Situated right in the heart of Ocean City’s downtown shopping district is Fusion Plate Asian Cuisine. They offer a really nice varied menu at decent prices. I enjoyed their pork fried rice, chicken with broccoli, shrimp beef chow fun, and shaking beef. Everything I had was delicious and one of better Asian cuisine meals in the shore area. I look forward to trying more things next time.

Small Bites on Wildfire Radio returns this Sunday, May 16th at 635pm EST with a fantastic lineup! #SmallBitesRadio has been named #14 out of the Top 30 Best Hospitality Shows on the planet for 2020 and 2021 as well as being named #23 Top Philadelphia Lifestyle Influencer in 2021.

Warm weather has returned and #MemorialDay2021 is finally here with restrictions finally lifting in most places and now the sand and surf is calling our name. So where should we go? No one knows how to entertain at the VisitNJShore – Your Guide to the New Jersey Shore better than the world famous Do Atlantic City Boardwalk. With that being said we will be joined by Ocean Casino Resort SVP of Food and Beverage Warren Richards. With endless dining options at the resort they have something for everyone. From celebrity spots helmed by Mark Wahlberg to Chef Jose Garces to high end groups like LDV Hospitality to the really nice dining hall you can’t go wrong and won’t go hungry. Ocean Casino Resort has all the entertainment you could want also from Topgolf, HQ2AC with appearances from Cash Cash, Meduza, Fergie DJ, as well as Ovation Hall presenting Jeff Dunham, Melissa Etheridge, Alice Cooper, The Beach Boys, Jay Leno, and more all just steps from beach.

We will also chat with Tamar Adler, contributing editor at Vogue and author of cookbooks Something Old, Something New and An Everlasting Meal from Scribner Books. Tamar has teamed up with Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Greater Philadelphia’s (JFCS) Nourishing Community events, a once-a-month virtual cooking series featuring top-area chefs, home cooks, and cookbook authors sharing recipes, and tips from their kitchens while raising funds to support JFCS food relief programs to battle food insecurity in the region with previous events having appearances from Frank E. Olivieri of The Original Pat’s King of Steaks and Sara May of South Hill Cider. “Food insecurity across the region is at an all-time high,” said Pia Eisenberg, Sr. Vice President, Community Engagement, JFCS Greater Philadelphia. “We are grateful to the participating chefs for giving us this opportunity to come together in a fun and engaging way to raise much-needed dollars for JFCS’ food relief efforts in support of the most vulnerable in our region.” Tamar will be appearing on Tuesday, June 8th at 6:30 p.m., preparing scones that you don’t want to miss. Be sure to contact JFCS as registration is required to attend their virtual events and Zoom links are provided once registration is completed.

Then joining us will be Jake Cohen a bright new star in the food world, most recently the editorial and test kitchen director of social media juggernaut the Feedfeed, and debut author of, ‘JEW-ISH: A COOKBOOK: Reinvented Recipes from a Modern Mensch’ from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. When most home cooks think of Jewish food, a few classics come to mind: chicken soup with matzo balls, challah, maybe a babka if you’re feeling ambitious. But as food writer and self-described “nice Jewish boy” Jake Cohen demonstrates in his stunning debut cookbook, Jewish food is so much more. In JEW-ISH, Cohen reinvents the food of his Ashkenazi heritage and draws inspiration from his husband’s Persian-Iraqi traditions to offer recipes that are modern, fresh, and enticing for a whole new generation of readers. Imagine the components of an everything bagel wrapped into a flaky galette and latkes dyed vibrant yellow with saffron for a Persian spin on the potato pancake, plus best-ever hybrid desserts like Macaroon Brownies and Pumpkin Spice Babka.

The hot days of summer are approaching so why not cool off with one of nature’s greatest gifts – WATER. Who better to talk to then Angela Cooper the CEO of Soho Waterworks. Soho Waterworks, a water distribution company, has demonstrated that innovation in the bottle water industry can yield a better, higher quality product for consumers. They recently launched a national campaign with the bold goal of providing Clean Water for All™. Its campaign to promote Clear Alaskan Glacial Water is an example of how this plan is paying off for bottlers, consumers and communities. Soho Waterworks is building public awareness about the health benefits of naturally sourced waters, considered to be a game changer in the wellness movement. They also enhance food and drink. Like fine wines, naturally sourced waters have their own unique profile and can be paired with foods to elevate any meal. At the same time, these waters contain naturally occurring minerals that provide superior health benefits to consumers, which are lacking in commercial water.

You may think by looking at Bamboo on the outside that they were just your average Chinese take-out restaurant. Well that couldn’t be further from the truth for a while there. They not only offered Chinese, they had a very diverse and extensive Japanese list as well for take-out as well. Service was quick, efficient, and prices affordable compared to a sit down restaurant. I had Kani, Unagi, Philly Roll, and Hamachi. Currently they have suspended the sushi offerings and have gone back to just traditional Chinese take-out menu.

With international travel restrictions easing a bit for fully vaccinated individuals everyone has the taste of travel coming back. Inspired by Iceland was one of the first to reopen so that everyone can once again visit Blue Lagoon Iceland, Iceland Airwaves, as well as their many natural beauty and wonders and what better way to get into the mood than to have a preview what you can experience there right in your own home. We will talk to Björn Steinar Jónsson, Saltverk’s founder and engineer turned restaurateur. Saltverk is hand-harvested sustainable sea salt using a long-forgotten 17th-century process from the remote Visit Westfjords – Iceland. Using 100% geothermal energy and only one raw material — the pristine seawater of the region — Saltverk is one of the few entirely sustainable flake sea-salt producers in the world. The pure flavor and ingredients set Saltverk’s salts apart. Saltverk can be found in the kitchens of some of the world’s most renowned restaurants. Then we will be joined by Kjartan Gíslason the founder of Omnom Chocolate. Omnom is Iceland’s first and only “bean-to-bar” chocolate maker. Omnom’s core ingredients include: Single-origin cocoa beans from Madagascar, Tanzania and Nicaragua; organic sugar cane; and natural Icelandic milk powder directly from farmers to further help assess the social, environmental and economic impact of its purchases. The factory itself runs on 100% geothermal energy, making Omnom a leading bean-to-bar producer using renewable energy.

Coming back to America we will welcome on the show James Caverly the CEO of Booskerdoo Coffee & Baking Co. In 2009, James and Amelia Caverly had no idea what a staple their blurry dream would become when they decided to make their first pound of roasted coffee beans in their one-bedroom NYC apartment. Fast forward to 2020, six locations, a franchising program, and 2 kids later, Booskerdoo Coffee & Baking Co. is one of the Jersey Shore’s most beloved coffee shops. Their mission is a simple one: serve a delicious cup of freshly roasted coffee and fantastic homemade baked goods and ultimately, make people happy. Their pro-people outlook, inclusiveness, and free-spirited nature (which is telling by their name) are what has made Booskeroo such a success over the years, with growth on the way.
