Alex’s Bakery & Food Store – Woodlynne, NJ

Alex’s Bakery & Food Store – Woodlynne, NJ

If you blink you’ll miss Alex’s Bakery and Food Store. The parking lot is very tiny and once inside everything is mostly in Spanish, but the service really shines with friendly and helpful employees ready to help you. They are part bakery, part convenience store, and part restaurant. The prices are very reasonable no matter what part of the business you are shopping. I went with two Tres Leches cakes for a birthday party to try a little something out of the ordinary. One was vanilla and the other was chocolate. I really enjoyed the vanilla version and if you’re looking for Spanish/Latin styled food, treats, or sweets you should put them on your radar.

Perla – Philadelphia, PA

Perla – Philadelphia, PA

How do you celebrate a wedding anniversary properly? Well nothing says romance more than going to a restaurant where there are no plates, food is placed on banana leaves, and you eat with your hands of course. This is the exact scenario of how I was pampered on our special day and that is one of the many reasons why I love my wife and I couldn’t have been happier having a special meal prepared and served this way.

So now that you know where to go for your next anniversary meal, you are asking yourself how Perla was. Perla which is a modern Filipino restaurant by Lou Boquila only does this special setting and Kamayan meal type on Wednesdays and Sundays to give patrons an authentic sort of Filipino meal to try. We were told that the other days of the week it is more of a formal setting and regular restaurant even with wine glasses present. That sounds nice and all for normal folk, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and saw how foreign it seemed and out of practice I was to eat an entire meal with my hands even though it should feel and be a nature reflex. To top it all off, the food was delicious, service was personable, extremely efficient, and reasonably priced. You know a restaurant is comfortable and confident and that they are serving a quality product when the executive chef chats with you about some other restaurants you should try in the area if you are a true foodie. That openness of food love shows that they recognize good food and how a meal can bond strangers together wanting to share and talk about their experience with others and truly want them to try it for themselves. Not only will I try their recommendations, but I will be sure to return to Perla and I recommend you to try Perla as well.

The meal was Filipino biscuit (not pictured), SINANGAG jasmine rice, garlic, CHICKEN INASAL meyer lemon and soy marinade, FISH fried whole, LECHON KAWALI berkshire pork belly, LUMPIA ground pork, carrots, onions, ginger, PINAKBET eggplant, long beans, bokchoy, and a chocolate dessert that was DIVINE (not pictured).

Vitale’s Italian Bistro – Gloucester City, NJ

Vitale’s Italian Bistro – Gloucester City, NJ

This location was sadly closed for quite some time after they suffered an accidental fire. They have finally reopened and the new interior is fresh and modern with a sleek yet nostalgic feel. The menu is classic Italian with some flair. They covered the basics well and the meal was decent and enjoyable. I had the stuffed long hots, clams casino, Gnocchi Special with sautéed shrimp, spinach, and roasted red peppers in a brandy cream sauce, and bananas foster to end the meal. Cost of meal was average while service was friendly and efficient.

Small Bites

D and L Coffee Service Inc. presents the #1 listed “Food Radio show Philadelphia” and #1 listed “Food Radio show South Jersey”, Small Bites with Donato Marino and Derek Timm of Bluejeanfood.com on Wildfire Radio Podcast Recording Studio this Sunday, October 6th at 635pm EST with a stellar lineup and special co-host John Howard-Fusco.
We are happy to welcome Jordan Zucker, a University of Pennsylvania graduate to talk about the first of its kind cookbook harmonizing food, wine, and sound “One Dish – Four Seasons: Food, Wine, and Sound – All Year Round” from Home Sauce Publications. The cookbook is a thoughtfully laid out family collaboration and sophisticated labor of love. Zucker also known as the ringleader for the modern female sports fan (who hosts A Girl’s Guide to Sports, appeared on Food Network’s Grill It! with Bobby Flay, and was a recurring character on the popular TV series Scrubs) takes a base recipe, and by varying seasonally available ingredients, creatively builds four versions of each dish (with help from her expert cook mom): for winter, spring, summer and fall. Then the dish goes from good to great when matched with a complementing wine (with suggestions from her former- sommelier dad) and hip tunes. Jordan also has a book signing at University of Pennsylvania Bookstore Barnes & Noble on Monday, October 14th at 6pm.
Then we are thrilled to welcome Daniel Leader the pioneer from Bread Alone Bakery, who revolutionized American artisan bread baking to talk about his new book with Lauren Chattman called “Living Bread: Tradition and Innovation in Artisan Bread Making” from Avery Publishing of Penguin Group (USA). At twenty-two, Daniel Leader stumbled across the intoxicating perfume of bread baking in the back room of a Parisian boulangerie, and he has loved and devoted himself to making quality bread ever since. He went on to create Bread Alone, the now-iconic bakery that has become one of the most beloved artisan bread companies in the country. Today, professional bakers and bread enthusiasts from all over the world flock to Bread Alone Bakery’s headquarters in the Catskill, New York to learn Dan’s signature techniques and baking philosophy. Living Bread provides a fascinating look into the way artisan bread baking has evolved and continues to change–from wheat farming practices and advances in milling, to sourdough starters and the mechanics of mixing dough. Influenced by art and science in equal measure, Leader presents exciting twists on classics such as Curry Tomato Ciabatta, Vegan Brioche, and Chocolate Sourdough Babka, as well as traditional recipes. Sprinkled with anecdotes and evocative photos from Leader’s own travels and encounters with artisans who have influenced him, Living Bread is a love letter, and a cutting-edge guide, to the practice of making “good bread.”
Also joining in on the fun will be John Stewart the owner and Executive Chef of Kitchen 519 a standby for American comfort food prepared with local ingredients in a cheerful, art-lined space in Glendora, New Jersey. A former mechanics garage has been transformed with high ceilings, eclectic design, and lots of flair giving Kitchen 519 a feel not found around the area. The menu is constantly evolving and innovative with a focus on fresh and sustainable always trying to give back to the community while still being affordable for all to come out and dine.
Last but certainly not least is Michael Gabriele to talk about his fourth book on New Jersey history “Stories from New Jersey Diners: Monuments to Community” from American Palate The History Press Arcadia Publishing documenting colorful stories from the Diner Capital of the World. Michael is a graduate of Montclair State University and has worked as a journalist, freelance writer, diner blogger for Jersey Bites, and author for more than forty years. He is a member of the board of trustees for the annual New Jersey Folk Festival at Rutgers University and a member of the executive board for the Nutley Historical Society and serves on the advisory board of the Clifton Cultural Arts Center. Diners are where communities across the Garden State go to celebrate milestones, form lifetime bonds and take comfort in food. Daily life at the counter or in the booth inspires sentimental recollections that reflect the state’s spirit and history. Late-night eats fueled Wildwood, New Jersey wild rock-and-roll days. An entrepreneur traveled eight thousand miles from India and opened a diner in Shamong, New Jersey. From an impromptu midnight wedding in an Elizabeth lunch wagon to a Vietnam veteran sustained by a heartfelt note from a beloved Mount Holly Township NJ waitress, these are true tales from the soul of New Jersey.

Local Bar and Kitchen – Gibbstown, NJ

Local Bar and Kitchen – Gibbstown, NJ

With a neighborhood watering spot feel and atmosphere it is easy to feel at home here, but where Local  Bar and Kitchen really shines is their wings. Man these wings were delicious. I had the hot and honey wings which were just phenomenal and the Garlic Parm wings that were some the best around. Highly recommend dining or getting a take-out order of wings from Local if in or around the area. I also had their version of Classic Cheeseburger with old bay fries. It did the job of filling me up, but next time I’m just sticking with the wings and trying a few other flavors of wings they have.

Pizzeria Beddia – Philadelphia, PA

Pizzeria Beddia – Philadelphia, PA

Named by Bon Appetit one of the best Restaurants of 2019 in America and also named by Time magazine as one of the top 19 best places in the world is a lot to live up to. Well when you serve one of the HOLY SH#! best tasting pizza I’ve ever had, the accolades are well deserved. Best of the World and America? I’m not sure, but the Squash Pizza made 3 ways topped with arugula was hands down an out of body experience regarding pizza and my thoughts on pizza. When ordered, it was the pizza I was least looking forward to eating, but figured I would try the special of the night. The special of the night??? They need this pizza on the menu EVERYDAY!!! I’ve never even been a fan of specialty pizza previously and considered them a gimmick and overdone. I am happy I was proven wrong.

2

I will say this. They are certainly the best around anywhere as far as specialty pizza is concerned. There are A LOT of great pizza places in Philly that I really enjoy in regards to plain cheese pizza and tomato pie so competition is tough here. Pizzeria Beddia does not disappoint and ranks up there with a great plain pie and tomato pie. This is Philly style pizza done well with the crust, sauce, and cheese you are used to, but better than most.

Again where they excel is taking good quality and high end fresh ingredients and making them shine. By putting roasted onions, crimini mushrooms, and sausage on top of another pizza, it really elevated it and brought it to another level.

4

They really top it all off with an AMAZING sweat cream soft serve dessert. It was like a heavenly fancy version of Mr. Softee. Perfect and the perfect way to end the meal. The check-in process is a little clunky, but the service and food were top notch. I know to eat there isn’t easy, but if you like pizza they are MUST destination to try. You can even enjoy some good adult beverages while there and who doesn’t like that.
